My friend and I were watching this on Saturday night and he said they had sex in the movie when she was on top of him in bed. Were they having sex?

shareUmmm... yes, indeed. There was some coitus involved in this movie. I'm not sure how much more clearly the picture could have been painted, actually. Take, for instance, Louden's line of, "It really does make you hungry, doesn't it?" immediately after the campsite scene. If that doesn't make it crystal, I'm not sure what will.

He loved Carla and at first she didn't love him back, which is like in Romeo and Juliet and Romeo loved Rosaline and she didn't love him back. But, like in Romeo and Juliet, there is requited love when her and Louden are in the field and tells him he has a lifetime left to do things, and when she asks him about vision quest and all the women to make love to. He says "name one", and then she pulls him towards her, which is part of the romantic climax to the movie.

The book is quite descriptive of their sex life, even to go as far as naming positions.

I watched this as a junior in high school. And that's the ONE thing which would have made this movie a bit more awesome. Prolonged or at least more physically depicted sex scene with Louden and Carla.

I think it's funny that young people have no sense of allusion or innuendo anymore. They have to see people graphically have sex in a movie these days to understand that something sexual happened between the characters.
