I interpreted that it was more about being careful what you wish for.
Scott never felt he fit in, played in an extremely mediocre basketball team, lusted after the popular girl at school. When he became the wolf, suddenly he was successful at basketball, the popular girl was throwing herself at him, he had a lot of fans. But look at the cost.
It gave him a certain arrogance, and hurt the people who had actually cared about him before he was the wolf. He forgot about his actual friends and family, to embrace people who were suddenly interested because he was seen as 'cool'. Pamela was draping herself over him, and running back to Mick the next minute. When he won the basketball game as himself, suddenly she was interested again. But he wisely chose Boof, who had been there for him for years, not just when he was considered the cool guy.
Really, I saw it as a lesson about appreciating what was important.
