I never realized just how much of a d*ck Richard Crenna's character was...
I mostly just watched this as a kid in the late '80s/early '90s, so older people just weren't relevant to me back then :-P
But now that I watch this as an adult... Crenna's character was a jerk, not just to the Chester family, but also to his own... Remember the seat where they're fighting over lobster? Crenna's "Al Pellet" was clearly very rude to his own wife and guests at dinner, and to others elsewhere. He even pushed his wife around, while mocking John Candy's "Jack Chester" and his family... They did a really good job showing that someone like him being generally a jerk to everyone simply because he believes his money gives him permission to say and do whatever he wants... It made me dislike the character as a kid, but I wasn't able to pick up on the other interactions he had with other "working class" people throughout the movie... As an adult, I downright loathe every part of his character from moment 1 until the end.
Why do I get the feeling that his character was in part inspired by Donald Trump?? :-P
