Aside from some nice shots of Georgetown, this movie is truly horrible in almost every respect. Compare to "About Last Night", with Lowe and Moore, which only came out one year late, but still holds up pretty well. Funny and true, unlike this hollow, empty, embarassing slop.
shareI couldn't agree more. This is a bad film. I thought the story of Emilio Estevez tracking down his old crush was cute but that was it. My favorite bad moment was Andrew McCarthy showing that his article on the meaning of life had made the front page. Geez you would think they would have printed up some extra copies of that days edition.

Almost everyone I know loves this movie. I have had to sit through this piece of trash 3 times now because some wise guy/girl is convinced I missed something or didn't get it because I was slightly older than the characters during that same time period. I have tried pointing out where I think the film goes wrong (MANY times) but they don't see it like I do. Just as long as I never, ever have to watch it again.

Fake, superficial and shallow, 80's trashy yuppie relationship\friendship drama. Very much a product of it's spiritually impoverished times, ideals and mores. Are we supposed to care about these arrogant, selfish and self absorbed individuals? It wasn't any good then and it hasn't gotten any better since. Not even enjoyable as an 80's rush\fix, as it's main characters are all artificial and obnoxious.
Ultimately, the film is a cop out. There is no genuine or real conflict in the film or interesting character arcs. I find the Jules character, played by Demi Moore, the most interesting and best acted; but opportunities were wasted to give her more depth and understanding. All she cried about in the end during her breakdown, was her evil step monster and why daddy didn't love her. Wouldn't a suicide attempt and possible death of her character, given the film more resonance to shake up the other brats in the pack?
Kirby (Emilio Estevez), was studying law, yet was an immature creep and stalker, who was supposed to provide the film with a cute humorous undercurrent. It only comes across as childish as his character and strained for effect. Kevin (Andrew McCarthy), was suspected as gay, yet was secretly in love with Leslie (Ally Sheedy) and neither were that believable or had much chemistry when they did get together. Wouldn't it have been more potent, to have made his character actually gay, since he looked it anyway? Perhaps this was too tough for Hollywood mainstream to handle in 85? Even the one gay character in it was a stereotype and his introduction had him holding a bright red cocktail. Later on, during a bar brawl scene, he comments about his nose job. WTF! Director Joel Schumacher is gay. He should have known better.
Not much to say about Judd Nelson, other than I have never warmed to him as an actor and he acts as smug as he looks. Rob Lowe is one pretty little thing and his feminine looks are most unfortunate. Have never found him believable as a ladies man and calling his acting mediocre here, is a compliment. What is with the earring he wears in his right ear. Doesn't that signify gay??? I find Mare Winningham always interesting to watch; but her frumpy bland character here, is not really that layered or nuanced enough too make her hidden lust for Billy realistic.
Watch ABOUT LAST NIGHT-86 instead, with Moore and Lowe. Much better script, with stronger, more realistic performances.....even from Lowe.

Yes, nothing much has really changed. Experiencing the 80's as a teenager and due to some nostalgia value, I look back with some fondness though. However, (and I can only speak from my own experience), I think the 80's was the start of more awareness and questioning creeping in by many, yet it still has a naive appeal or charm about it. Things were still new and had appeal value. I suppose every era\decade is the same in regards to peoples attitudes and behavior; ones eyes have to be open to see it though. Did you find the 70's the same?

I am a fan of many 80s movies and just got around to watching this. You are right it is painful to watch. Self absorbed, one dimensional characters and bad acting. It was truly dreadful.

The characterisation was terrible. They were all (except Wendy) self-centered, entitled idiots who indulged themselves. It was ridiculous to think audiences would be sympathetic.

Yeah, I was 'just starting out in the real world' when this came out, so I assume I was the target demographic. Didn't see it back then, mainly because as a fresh out of high school (I skipped the college thing as I couldn't afford it) guy trying to keep the rent paid a movie had to look pretty amazing for me to spend the cash to go see it back then. I was not impressed with the trailers for this when I was young.
My wife made me watch it last night and all I could think was "thank god I spent the money that could have gone towards this on Top Ramen." That was really hard to sit through.
yeah, except not even "nice shots of Georgetown" are accurate as this was filmed at the University of MD. haha

The folks who "love" this movie at the same ones who like American Idol, Survivor, 2 1/2 Morons, etc. All these shows are made just for you, the folks with s%$t in your mouth for taste.
