Without looking I'd say Mickey Mantle.

That was my first guess as well. Mantle was pretty young in '53, and hadn't come into his own yet.

The question itself was a goof on many WWII movies in which an American soldier would ask of a suspected Nazi spy as it was assumed that only a honest to goodness GI Joe would know the answer.
