So what was the plan in the bunker after supplies ran out?

So the guys in the bunker under the drive in said the facility was equipped for just under 2 years of underground living. What were they planning to do after that if the whole world above them was destroyed?

reply

Come back to the surface with the troops they had stationed in the bunker with them, and start a little tinpot military dictatorship somewhere, I'm guessing. Realistically, I don't think most post-global-nuclear-war planning really amounted to much in terms of rebuilding...

Since when is 17 months "just under 2 years"? That's less than 1,5 years! If it was something like 20 months, then sure. But seventeen! That's a LOT (a whole month) under 1,5 years - not "JUST under 2 years". Get your facts straight, man, before posting!

To answer the question, they could always have committed group-suicide by that point. Or one by one, like: "Ok, I am outta here, enjoy my body after I am gone! *BLAM* *DROP* (sorry, I don't know an english sound effect for a fully-clothed human body 'dropping dead' on the floor of a bunker)"

I mean, eating the bodies one by one would extend the "most important individual's" lifespan a little bit, especially if he rations it a bit. Though I'd rather take a bullet into the brain (:

The other poster's reply is ludicrous - what? You mean there's no more radiation after 17 months, and you can freely form some 'military post'? The world would be completely inhabitable for probably THOUSANDS of years if not TENS OF THOUSANDS OF YEARS - the radiation would kill you quickly! How do you form any military posts on the planet that doesn't grow any food and that has so much radiation that you would die probably in a few hours, no matter what you are wearing? Unless you happen to be wearing several meters of solid lead shielding, of course.. (you probably blindly trust and believe that NASA sent men on the moon in the 60's, heh!)

reply

I think you're over estimating the radiation, after a year and a half it would be some what livable if you avoid the areas directly hit.

reply

Yes, but what would be left on the surface? This is what I never could understand from people like Curtis LeMay and to some extent Regan. They seemed to think a nuclear war would be winnable, or at least survivable. Yes, you might survive, but the world around you would be wrecked. You would be basically be starting over again from scratch. If you wanted to return to life in the 17th century it might be worth it, but otherwise it was pure insanity.

reply

and the way the military plans it will probably only last 6 months

reply

Fallout is lethal for about 2 months. Major cities would be decimated, but the smaller towns and countryside would be fine. Even though there are enough nukes to effectively end a civilization, I doubt Russia would have been lobbing them at Idaho or Nebraska. At least not enough to ruin the whole state.

This isn't a morality contest.
