The Ending

I hate it when people spoil movies for me, but I can never seem to find the time to rent this film. I saw it once, about 3 years ago, on television, but missed out on the big "surprise/twist/shocker" ending. Would someone please fill me in on the ending? Thanks.

I don't mind a reasonable amount of trouble

'jesus that's it?' thats what my reaction was just a few minutes ago when the credits started to roll. strangely enough, I had that same reaction when I first saw my now favorite film 'eyes wide shut' 5 years ago. So maybe this will grow on me, first time i've seen it in about 15-17 years i think. the suprise ending depending where you left off is: after treat brings her back from their 'date', she tells him to get lost, then makes up with her mom and sister and the credits roll.

I agree with red cloak. It is just a dull ending. I felt she was raped. And that was it.

I never read the book, but I saw the movie & I loved it. I saw this movie many years ago and I have always wondered...was Connie raped at the end? It seems that people here know the answer, but it wasn't clear from the movie. Maybe it comes from the ending in the book.

In the story it's kind of suggested that yes Connie is indeed raped. She ends up falling into the trap of Arnold Friend when he threatens to hurt her family when they come home if she doesn't come out. The story ends with the author stating that Connie leaves with Arnold to a place she's never been. Now you can take that literal or not. But like stated before Arnold only wants her for one thing. Obviously the guy is a little crazy. He thinks he was sent there to 'unpurify' Connie. Which I believe he does. NOw the reason the ending is so great in the story is because it's such a great mystery, it leaves the reader in suspicion. Does he rape her? Or better yet, Does she come back? No one really knows how dangerous Arnold is, he could have killed Connie when he was finished with her, it's gruesome and shocking. It gets you thinking like that, which is why the story is great.

As for the movie. The ending they tagged on has mixed feelings. Mine are 100%negative. Now I liked the movie granted, I thought it was great, but when the last ten minutes of the movie played I couldn't take it seriously. First of all, Arnold does return Connie to her home, and she looks untouched. A little dazed but that's all. Her family is already home and she of course is a little distant, but starts talking to them about the BBQ. Also, the mother comes out and apologizes about slapping her earlier, And then Connie and June talk things out, and Connie tells June about Arnold but then takes it back. THe two end up slow dancing together in a very awkward ending. What I interpreted about the film is that this terrible rape, was suppose to play the key target in setting Connie closer to her family.

Were these producers nuts? Out of all the life altering changes they chose rape? Rape is a horrific crime, if anything I'd assume it would only distance Connie from her family more.

I thought that the guy early on in the film takes Connie's virginity? Isn't there a scene when she drives to a lookout and they start making out. The next scene Connie is telling her friend how great it was. It never actually states if she had sex, but that's what I got out of it.

The Friends of Eddie Coyle needs to be released on DVD!

I'm very interested in reading the book now. The movie was good, but I'm hearing some great things about the book.
