I think you really owe it to yourself to read the short story WHERE ARE YOU GOING? WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? on which the film is based. You can read it online (I'll post the link). You can also LISTEN to it online and I'll post that link as well.
Connie wasn't necessarily horrible to her sister, June, but she has plenty of disdain for her (June was a secretary at Connie's high school, June was slightly overweight, June didn't dress well, June was the apple of her parents eye, etc.).
I think after Connie's experience with Arnold Friend, she appreciates her family more than ever before, hence her slow dancing with June to "Handy Man". Connie is also realizing that being pretty, slim and well-dressed isn't all that it's cracked up to be.
