Hey how about if the children of Jake, Paden, Mal, and the Scott Glenn character, I can't recall his name, all returned to Silverado to face a whole new set of troubles? It would be great if Kevin C and Kevin K, Glenn, and Glover would all appear, but alas, we know they probably won't. Just an idea.
That's a great title, budggal. And it would be great. Imagine the trouble the main characters' kids could get into. Oh the possibilities. Hey scriptwriters out there, get this going!!!
Kasdan said on the DVD he has already written the script for the sequel. Wrote it years ago. But isn't really for the idea. Apparently not for the idea of sequels in general. This coming from the man who wrote two Star Wars sequels. Whatever.
The first time I saw the movie, I too thought a sequel would be a good idea, but now I have second thoughts on it.
Kasden made one absolutely perfect gem of a film, and no one can do that twice. It may sound presumptiouous, but you can no more make a sequal to SILVERADO that does the original justice than you can make a sequal to CITIZEN KANE.
IMHO, the ONLY movie that has EVER had a worthy sequal made was THE GODFATHER (i.e., GODFATHER II), and even THAT has it's problems.
Reluctantly, I came to the conclusion that Kasden should just let his original stand on it's own considerable merits... he'd never be able to equal the original, let alone top it.
BTW... my envisioning of a sequal didn't do the generation thing (you'd be hard pressed to find four more leading characters who can work as well together cinematically as the original SILVERADO crew). I was thinking of the original bunch getting together again, either in Silverado or some other location, to deal with another problem. A good starting point would be with Sheriff Paden winding up in deep doodoo over some new problem in Silverado. They wouldn't get together by design; no one sends for anybody. They all just wind up in the same place by chance, just like in the original. All arrive at different times in the problem to lend a hand as needed with the current crisis. The big finish comes when all four of them are finally together again.
It was obvious that a sequel was intended at the time as when Glenn and Costner ride off for California at the end, Costner turns and yells "we'll be back". I would have liked to have seen more of this likeable group of characters.
If it were about 15 years ago, I'd agree that a sequel would be wonderful, but I think too much time has gone by to do it justice.
As it stands, I think this is a gem of a movie, and one that should not have its legacy (potentially) sullied by the creation of a (potentially inferior)sequel. Sorta how I feel about a new Indy Jones film--they ended on a high note and shouldn't gamble on making one that might not be as good, just for the sake of doing it.
Unless they're 100% sure it will rock. ;)
