Realism hole (spoiler?)

After Emmett shoots up the can, he gets ambushed. But anyone who lived by the gun the way he had, would have reloaded the second he was caught, or while running for the rifle. His arms were still free when lassoed, yet he didn't try to reload. All he needed was a couple of bullets loaded to do what he had to do. It isn't that hard and doesn't take that long to drop the empties and stick in a couple of rounds.

Getting caught and doing nothing but running doesn't equate with the opening of the movie.

That one's bothered me so bad that to this day, I carry a loaded backup to the range. Actually, the scene is quite realistic to me. They'd have opened fire the second he tried to reload.

But he could have picked a place to practice where it'd be harder to get ambushed.

Sukarno would never have allowed this to happen.

Nothing is more beautiful than nothing.

Re-loading those kind of firearms is not a quick job. With the time he had, he would have managed maybe two rounds. If that. and the badguys would have just shot him down when they saw him doing it. -They would have reacted to him as if he was drawing a gun.

So no. It is was actually rather realistic.

Not being able to reload is one issue which makes sense to me but shooting your pistol dry out in the middle of no where with the only other gun you have is a running distance from you made no sense to me. He left himself wide open. If he had a backup on him that's one thing but to leave himself open like he did, that does not make sense to me.

Who know's if Emmett even had any spare ammo on him? He's practising and would soon get through whatever he may have had on his person, this could have been easily observed by the bad guys. As far as his horse being a little away, I notice in the film he often dismounted his horse without tying it up, I'm sure it would have wandered off a bit. The only problem in my mind with this scene is, as others have noted, why practice in such a vulnerable location when Emmett knew there could be people looking for him?

reply

"Who know's if Emmett even had any spare ammo on him?"

Only a complete idiot would be caught alone and without ammo in that part of the country. Still, as others have mentioned,he would have been immediately gunned down the instant he made one 'false move'.Now on the other hand, Kostners character...

reply

Yeah, but I also said "He's practising and would soon get through whatever he may have had on his person..." I take it you don't believe he has an unlimited supply of ammunition in his pockets.

reply

Hey folks,

Crabapple is correct. Single-action revolvers of the time like the Colt and modern single-action western style revolvers are not quickly reloaded. Instead of being a top-break ejection or having a swing out cylinder, they had a chamber gate that opens over one chamber, and each of the six chambers has to be emptied with an ejection rod located under and to the side of the barrel. Then you have to load each chamber individually before closing the loading gate and being ready to fire again. It really takes a bit of time and hand dexterity to reload the Colt style revolver. The idea of doing it while trying to run away is just not realistic.

Best wishes,

What bothered me was how twice in the movie horses were given up with the saddle & all the other stuff packed on the horse! No way would a cowboy give or return a horse without taking off the saddle at the very least!

reply

Well, Emmett's pinto came with the saddle, and it belonged to McKendrick too.

reply

Exactly. The brand was on the hindquarters of the horse, and it was already too late for McKendrick to deny it was one of his men who attacked Emmett at the beginning of the film.
