Jake was annoying
Well maybe "annoying" is a bit strong. He was over the top though.

I fully recant what I said about Jake as being “annoying.” I would, however, rather Jake be a little more toned down - personally speaking. I don’t object to the characterization - Jake’s character just stood out to me more so than any other major character. Immature I can agree with but he is not a brat. He isn’t unpleasant as the word “brat” implies. I would describe Jake with nothing more than “you-wild-kid-ya,” taking a line from another movie (as you said, we've known plenty of guys like this and every group has one).
Another thing: The statement about the "man with no name crap" IS crap.

I am not only an Eastwood fan but (possibly more so) a fan of Harmonica (Charles Bronson). So I guess the boat stops here for our seeing eye-to-eye. I enjoy movies where there are "buddies to ride with." I still begrudgingly rank Tombstone as, not only my favorite western, but as my favorite movie.
I also think that Sergio Leon's spaghetti westerns (especially Once Upon A Time In The West) are so much better than Silverado. And any western for that matter. Except for (maybe, I haven't thought about it) Unforgiven, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, and even something like High Noon.

I agree: Jake was VERY annoying. This movie would have been a lot more interesting if he had been killed. This movie was too "aw shucks" for my tastes.
I think he had a.d.h.d. Funny to watch though.
shareI couldn't disagree more. His energy was infectious-the way he was swinging on the monkey bars-excuse, jail cell bars-while telling how he ended up in effect on death row was hilarious-capped perfectly by John Cleese's droll description of one of many people described in the altercation as "the dead one." The eager way he sympathizes and agrees with Cleese that he, too, had killed a man in a fair fight was funny, too. The simultaneous shooting of two bad guys at 45 degree angles was something I'd never seen before or since. And the one line that he delivers in a calm, understated, reflective was funny, too: "Gee, Paden, her old man ain't even cold yet!"
shareHeck I just enjoyed seeing Kevin Costner put energy into a character. He was actually FUN to watch in this movie.
shareKevin Costner does better in a supporting role. As a leading man, he is an acquired taste.
shareI love the classic westerns but I have to say I found this flick very enjoyable/entertaining. Kostner had that pistol twirling down pat and wasn't too bad at riding either ! I think he really put his heart into this movie - his comedic timing along with Cleese had me cracking up. No, not a western in the 'classic' sense but good fun IMHO.
shareI happened to play (Conrad) "her old man".

You should have trusted them. :)
shareNo, I'm going to agree with the OP on this; Jake should have been shot. In fact, I find it impossible to believe that with the exception of getting caught the one time in the town where John Cleese is the sheriff, he was able to stay out of trouble and not get killed all during the 5 years that his brother was in jail. As we saw when Jake gets into Silverado, he's in trouble within 5 minutes of arriving. Sure, he's a sure shot, but just like John Cleese was able to capture him, so would someone else have been able to.
I asked the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

Doesn't it get us all?

Jake was my favorite Kevin Costner character.
shareHe didn't ruin the the movie, but definitely wasn't the best part of it at all.

I think his character was a wild child and he was funny. I think that was put in there to help lighten up the mood. It is a western with violence involved. I'm glad Jake came out ok with just a bruise under the chin. This is a good movie but one thing is wrong: not enough of Kevin Costner in it.
shareYou must be a guy. He was almost as hot in this movie as he was in Bull Durham. Unfortunately after that he just became boring.
I'm not really hungry, but I would like to have reservations somewhere.
kC never was, never will be boring. He is sexy down to every toenail.
He is so good in comedy and in every genre.
I have always loved Kevin Costner and have never found him boring. He has made some great movies (and I have even liked the not so great ones. )
"Don't "yeah,yeah" me, Lois.
He was irritating and frankly, he should have died in order to serve the story and as a lesson / motivation for the other main characters. He was a crazy loose cannon (we have no reason to suspect he told the truth about the fight that landed him in jail) and a de facto criminal for casually gunning down so many people. He clearly loved fighting and didn't mind killing as long as he got to show off doing it - not to mention the fact that a *jury* convicted him of murder, in a place where we have no reason to suspect the sherrif is anything BUT a nice guy!
I'm amazed we're supposed to root for him.
The Doctor is out. Far out.
He struck me as a simpleton!
shareHis character seemed too over-the-top for me. I love Westerns & this one is good (especially by much of recent Hollywood's standards) with the exception of "Jake". It is not as gritty as I would like b/c the old West was not as clean as this portrayed. But it's a fun enjoyable movie.
