Scott Glenn

Some posters have commented unfavourably on this film because it has a cast with few western regulars. I've never seen that as an issue myself and of course Kevin Costner went on to make some fine westerns at a later stage.

As far as I know, Silverado was Scott Glenn's only western, yet I feel he quietly just about stole the show as Emmett. IMO he had the looks and charisma to really succeed in this genre and I'm surprised he didn't do more, though I suppose there wasn't a lot of westerns on the go at the time.

I'd be interested to see what others think.

I agree Emmet, is one of my all time favorite western movie characters.

He was my favourite too.

I liked something about each of the four characters, however, Emmett is my favorite too. I liked his loyalty to his family and friends and his quiet side.

Scott Glenn was by far the most realistic character. Plus he's just a great actor (under-rated too) period. Kline was good as was Brian Dennehy. Both seemed comfortable in their roles and didn't ham up their acting.

reply

I'm not sure what you mean by "more realistic character".

Glenn did a good job here and I like him as an actor HOWEVER he is not underrated, he's not THAT great of an actor. He has very limited range. You probably think Henry Winkler should play Hamlet too huh???

reply

Definitely liked Glenn the most. Him whittling on the gallows is one of my favorite shots in the movie

Glenn is terrific in this. I'd never seen him before, when I first saw this movie, and assumed that he was a seasoned Western actor.

I like his emotionless manner and delivery - perfect for the character.

On a side note, I also like that he's a lefty, and all his moves, gun-handling, etc., felt more familiar.

reply

Like other left-handed gun hands such as Bruce Willis, Mark Wahlberg, Steve McQueen and the Sundance Kid himself Robert Redford.🐭

reply

You got me, man.

Never noticed Steve McQueen, though.

Jeremy Renner too, and, (hate to say it), Sly Stallone.

reply

Steve McQueen was a rightie in 'The Getaway'.

Just sayin'

Scott Glen seems a natural as a cowboy though I think you could argue Man On Fire has a western structure - I guess it's a pity Westerns were out of fashion for so long.
