With the exception of leaving out the other sister Margarite, this is a very faithful adaptation to Jane Austens' first novel. I love the book and I love this film version.
I also thought Robert Swann made a great Colonel Brandon very much like Alan Rickman did as well in the 1995 version (love that one too!).
I just borrowed this from a local library, and I was suprised to see the actress who played Charlotte in the 1980 P& P (which I bought) on the cover of the DVD. I haven't seen any actor who has been in more than one Jane Austen adaptation. I thought Richards had a thankless role as Charlotte especially considering the Mr. Collins in that P & P, so I hope she's better in this.
Sylvestra Le Touzel How could I have forgotten her? As a completely aside, I happen to be a Doc Martin fan and she was in one episode of that. Very entertaining.
I stand corrected. I finished the series and Irene Richard was definitely better in this than in P & P. Next up: when I get it, the 1995 Emma Thompson version.
PS It's hard enough to keep track of the casts of the various adaptations of just one Austen book, let alone six.
Also, Is it me or does Willoughby remind anyone else of Wickham from P & P?
That's interesting -- I really liked Irene Richard as Charlotte. I don't think I have a favorite Elinor. All the ladies I've seen have done admirably. Except that Emma Thompson was way too old for the part.
I very much enjoyed it! although i must say i did not like the actor who played edward. he wasn't as dashing as i imagined edward to be, and yes, colonel brandon was excellent. I also found myself comparing mr. willoughby to a repentant version of mr. wickham in P&P. anyone agree?
And I did like the expanded Willoughby scene -- something only hinted at in Thompson's version. Still, I suppose I'd like him to stay a bit more wretched....mean, I know.
Now back to Brandon -- never thought I'd say this, but he's taken precedence over Rickman's Brandon.
Oh, I LOVED this Edward. He was much more likable than the stuttering, stammering ham-pie that is Hugh Grant. I'm sorry, he just does nothing for me. But this Edward had such sad, soft, deep eyes, for the first time I could see why Elinor liked him.
