Just dug out my old VHS of it to watch as I always watch at in the weeks before Xmas. Makes me feel like a kid again. I love how its so 80s which is when I was a small kid & is part of the films charm.
No Xmas kids movie beats this one in my way or form.
Its your turn Heather, no Heather its Heathers turn... Heather!!! ~ Heathers
Santa Clause The Movie in the Xmas movie genre is to me like the original Star Wars trilogy is to me, a pure classic that only people who saw it in the cinema back in the days will really truly appreciate.
Though its a pure classic great, I would have to say its on par with my other all time christmas classic, Bill Murrays " Scrooged ". They are both perfect xmas movies in different ways.
I know its only the end of September but Im already getting prepared to watch this CLASSIC again. I think I'll watch it at the end of November in a few months time then again on Xmas Eve
I hope this thread never dies lol
They think we're the demons now - Prue Halliwell ~ All Hell Breaks Loose ~ Charmed
Every year, when november comes to a close I watch the vhs even though I own it on dvd. It just feels better to watch it on vhs, I don't know why but it does.
WHAT...is the air speed velocity of an unladen Swallow?
Agreed. This is a great movie. I saw this movie when I was a young boy. I loved it then and still love it now. I just can't understand how underrated this movie is on IMDB. Watching it now and loving it.
I agree smck this is a great film. I think Wonderful life is better. But for pure nostalgia this is awesome. I saw it in the cinema when i was five, i hope its on again this christmas.
I adore this film! It is THE Xmas movie for me... it brings back memories of watching it as a child (recorded from TV to VHS in Germany with foreign subs) and then pretty much every year until a couple of years ago, as the TV schedulers would put it on at a stupid time of night!
But this year is gonna be different, purchased on DVD from HMV for a mere £3! It is a classic xmas film, no gimmicks unlike many modern xmas movies, just a good family movie! Perfect for everyone! Is very much underated and all the younger generations are oblivious to it, I live with a mix of 18/19 year old students and they have never heard of it! I'm only 22! lol
Total bargain! I got scarily excited and kinda emotional when I saw it...my housemate who was with me was a little worried lol
Oooooo and I was utterly delighted to read in the TV guide for the Xmas and New Year weeks that it is on ITV 1, on Xmas day, at 10.55am!! Finally a good spot on the schedule!
It's certainly one of my favorites along with A Christmas Carol (The Muppet version and George C Scott one), National Lampoons Christmas Vacation, and Home Alone 1 and 2.
I agree with smck 1982uk (only taken me 5 years to comment it seems).
There are a number of reasons - Although there have been several great Christmas films AFTER this film was made, it seems like that weren't a massive number of great Christmas films in the decade or two BEFORE this film was made. It took the confidence of the age , the 1980s, to give a Christmas film the scale that children's films perhaps hadn't felt in general since 1971's Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. And 1985 was a very good time - the year of Back to the future and the year before The Goonies had been made.
Perhaps the most touching contrast is between the naked greed of Lithgow's character compared to the imaginative innocence of Dudley's Moore's Patch (Santa and his wife were good too). Dudley Moore had first found fame back with Peter Cook in the 60s and later on his own in Arthur (he was also a talented pianist) but he was brilliantly childlike here.
Its about to come on in a few minutes, i've never heard of it which suprised me because I enjoy Christmas movies. I think this sounds like it could be a winner, I love the actors involved and am a sucker for a good old classic Christmas movie! People have already mentioned alot of my favorites like Scrooged, Nightmare before Christmas, George C. Scott version of a Christmas Carol, and one I watch with the kids every year and have always watched since childhood: the original Rankin & Bass RUDOLPH! I have high hopes this will become one of them. By the way, to all of you no matter the time of year you read this--MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! :)
"Why does the Earth have colors?" - "The New World"
I watched it with my school just before the Xmas holidays when the movie was only a couple of years old back in 1987 and have loved it since then. I watch it with my family every year before Xmas.
I personally prefer something like this to the Home Alone offal or even A Christmas Story about that stupid BB gun. I hate both of those movies. This is also better than most of the made for TV Hallmark movies that are cranked out every year. There are dozens of them now.
For me the best is still Miracle on 34th Street with Natalie Wood, Maureen O'Hara and Edmund Gwen. None of the remakes can touch it. Also the original Bishop's Wife with Cary Grant and David Niven. They're more for grownups but after I stopped watching the kiddie movies those were my favorites.
For the kids you can't beat A Charlie Brown Christmas or How the Grinch Stole Christmas. I still watch those too.
A huge plus for this movie is they did NOT use little people as the elves.
Since the reindeer are more prominent in this movie I would have liked them to try to use real reindeer. More difficult but I think it would have added something.
