Super Duper Looper
Why? Santa could've just flew beneath Patch's flying contraption and caught them. Instead he looped way up and banked on coming back down to catch them. So unnecessary.

shareI just watched it and thought the same thing. It didn't make sense.
shareDid you watch it on AMC too ha? Nothing made sense. The thing that also lacked from this scene was that it didn't feel like there was a danger. Patch and Joe aren't wildly out of control, calling out for Santa to help. They have no idea of their impending doom which makes everything contradict each other. They're just joy-riding around. The script had literally nothing better for them to do. And yeah the Super Duper Looper was dumb,
shareI watched it on AMC last night, too. I think they're actually showing it again today.
shareI think the logic was that he wanted to avoid the inevitable explosion of Patch's aircraft and the debris that came with it, while still putting himself in a position to catch the two. Little far-fetched.
The real question was how did Santa know the explosion would not kill them? Did Patch hit an 'Eject' button before the explosion? I mean a box of those candy canes was apparently strong enough to create a blast that would destroy a laboratory. He had a whole trunk load of them in between two heat sources. I would have expected them to be cooked.
"Simpsons did it! Simpsons did it!"
An obvious - and flimsily shoehorned - pathetic set up and pay off gimmick. The reindeer couldn't do it earlier in the film so here comes the big finale where they can where it's supposed to rouse the audience - and it doesn't even accomplish anything.
And I saw it this morning on Sundance since we're naming channels.
"Jesus, does anyone?"
He needed the speed the loop would create on the way back down to catch patches.
