It used to give me the chills when I was a kid, and since it's the last shot in the entire movie it's the one that you end up leaving the film with.

Well he would have frozen to death and asphyxiated long before leaving the atmosphere. It struck me as a kid how similarly this film ends as THE BLACK HOLE with the villains essentially hurtling out into space. Another similar fate hits the malicious bear in the Lou Ferrigno HERCULES movie from 1983, which is easily the most hilarious of the three.
