"I fight to win! For me! For me!" - criticism of communism?

I see the hissy-fit by Drago as a jab at communism, demonstrating that people work primarily for themselves and not for "the glory of their country," as communists are fond of saying.

Just wondering if anyone else saw it that way too.

I think you're probably right. This film was made whilst the Cold War was still happening.🐭

I mainly took it as him not liking being used as some sort of propaganda. He's an athlete trying to win, just like Rocky. He shows some respect for Rocky as a fighter before the final round, telling him they will fight to the end, and then Rocky continues this on this whole "we're just sportsmen" thing when he says it's better for them 2 to be killing each other instead of 20 million.

reply

Good point. I always thought it was just to try and add some much needed depth to Drago's character, but I think you could be right.

I picked that up too. If anything it "humanized" Drago somewhat after he'd spent the movie being an automaton. There's some sportsmanlike respect just before the final round when he tells Rocky, "to the end."

Heck, this whole movie is a criticism of Communism/Socialism! Just look at their training methods; Rocky is the self made man while Drago is a product of the State, who sponsor his training and furnish everything. People sometimes call Rocky IV a 90 minute montage, but it's really more like a 90 minute metaphor.

Fluke, as always, is right on the freakin money!

He was my C.O. in Nam. CIA listed him as MIA but the V.A. ID'd his M.O. and put out an APB.

 My bosses might disagree, but thanks Lonestarr!

Yes something like that...all the communism thing was heavy handed, like Drago's full size portrait during the Anthem, half of the Red Army (and Navy, and Air Force) at the match etc...

That is an interesting observation.

Maybe team sports are more compatible with communist ideology than an individual sport like boxing.

Of course it was.... They distinctly show him gesturing up to the Polit Bureau, as if it were they who he was reproaching, and showed them all sitting there trying to shrink into their seats.

For whats its worth, the theater audience clapped very loudly at this part. Drago became endeared to the audience at this moment, setting the stage for Rocky's speech at the end.
