Sergeant Peasy was NOT a villain!

After viewing this film, I've come to the conclusion that Sutherland's character is far from evil as some on the boards have mentioned and is rather sympathetic. Consider:

-We never see him acting in a bloodthirsty manner, but rather is restrained and orderly in the battle scenes.

-He has some touching scenes with his sons, especially the one on the beach.

-When ordered to whip a prisoner, we see him give a questioning look to his superior. Even though he voices no objection, you can see his disapproval.

My conclusion is that Sergeant Major Peasly was a decent enough man who happened to find himself in the British army doing what soldiers have to do sometimes. Namely, acts of violence towards others when ordered to do so. What I don't understand is the vendetta the Dobb's have against him. If you want to see a REAL villain, check out Jason Issacs in "The Patriot".

umm, why did Dobb hold a vendetta against him? well lets see, if your son was kidnapped and nearly beated to death by some prick, wouldnt u want vengence to? i know i would

Dobb and his son were taken as prisoners of war, not kidnapped. Also, he should take revenge on the officer who gave the order, since it was obvious Peasy was only following orders, not getting enjoyment out of beating a helpless boy.

I agree.

As for Dobb's vendetta, that was technically misplaced and it isn't, unlike other films, depicted as necessarily right or correct, hence the end which I shall say no more about.

When he whipped a child, yes. that was just "great." You must be British.
