They had originally intended for Arnold to play Conan in the movie. I'm not sure exactly why they changed it. He's pretty much Conan, but with a different name.

Here's what the trivia page says:

Arnold Schwarzenegger was originally to have reprised the role of Conan in this film, as the Red Sonja character was a spinoff of the original Conan novels. Ultimately, a new character was created who was essentially Conan in everything but name.

Because Universal was hoping to launch a Conan film franchise and held the rights to the character, the Conan name could not be used in RED SONJA.

Looks like you're right. I think most people still see him as Conan though.

reply

Yeah...the character is pretty much Conan in everything but the name.

Its funny cause like the original poster said I also thought Conan was the character in the film, at least when I first saw it as a young kid. Kalidor and Conan pretty much are the same char with some minor differences such as their attire. I never cared much for Kalidor's red outfit, including the pants, Conan bared more skin making him more intimidating and giving him that barbaric look.

Anyways, had Schwarzenegger not participated in this film it would've been a lot worse.

I remember seeing this movie as a kid & was puzzled then, that it wasn't Conan but the character was there essentially, I remember other kids back then knew this also & wanted to think it was Conan anyway. I also recall thinking that people in Hollywood screwed things up.

reply

But they did screw things up ;-)
Maybe it's not a bad idea to just pretend it is Conan.

An article on comingsoon.net said Arnie's character couldn't be called Conan b/c of rights issues. Universal owned Conan while MGM owned Red Sonja. It is true that Hollywood movies have been known for screwing things up. Well not always but usually.
