No, it was because that sacred sphere was possessed by an all-female warrior clan who wished to exclude males from gaining access to its powers.
shareThe movie shows that the sphere destroys men on contact in the scene just after the temple is invaded. Gedren has one of her male warriors touch it and he dies in a flash of green light, then has her female companion touch the sphere without consequence. I'd hazard a guess that the reason that only females can touch the sphere is because, like the sphere, they are able to create life but that is only a guess and it isn't explained in the movie.
