I rememeber having a crush on her years ago when seeing this movie. I must have been about 7 or 8 at the time of watching it when it came out on Video for the first time.

shareI'd argue Bergman's acting is better (she is a good actress) in Conan: the Barbarian as Valeria.. but agreed, lol - she was far hotter with black hair and skintight, queenly black-attire in this movie. When Sonja confronts Gedren at the end in the crumbling throne-room is my favourite scene involving her.
shareThanks for your own perspective! I've always thought Bergman was the only actress capable of playing a queen clad in black spandex. In that last scene(wow) I was praying for that golden metallic skirt to be torn from her. I must say, even the jagged scar on Gedren's face looks sexy!
shareThe mask Sandahl wears and the black hair are good but, other than that, I feel the filmmakers really dropped the ball as far as Bergman's inclusion in this film. She has a killer body, as seen throughout "Conan the Barbarian," but in "Red Sonja" she's too covered up. Not that I have to see skin to be happy; but they should have at least utilized more form-fitting attire.
I guess I'll just have to re-watch "Conan the Barbarian" when I want to see Sandahl in all her incredibly curvy glory!
That black spandex unitard was about as form-fitting and skintight as you could get. Where the filmmakers erred is in that "cover-up" of a gold skirt; should have been more of a skimpy loincloth, if Sandahl was to have worn some sort of "royal regalia."
Watch that last scene as she battles Sonja...nice glimpses of Sandahl's curves as that skirt flys away!
Yeah, it was that damn gold skirt! (lol) It was frustrating because Sandahl's such a gorgeous curvy woman and I wasn't getting the eye-candy I was expecting.
But I'll be on the look-out for those important scenes the next time I catch it. Thanks.

I think what works best for Sandahl is not just that she's exceptionally well-formed, or that this form is so well toned, but that she actually has the moves. Everything from the sword skills (admitedly choreographed, but hinting at enough ease that she'd be great in real life) to just the gorgeous way she strides around in those boots!
Sandahl is a very strong woman and the outfit enhances this personality as much as her physical side.
The costume department did rather well in this flick, I think. For the type of production and what I imagine the resources available were, they certainly suit the actors and their characters. They look right.
Can't say the same for the screenplay, especially whoever thought it'd be a great idea to have a fully packed horse ready to go, 'just in case' Kallidor happens to show up...
