Seen this film twice now and the second time just posed more questions.
1) What happens to Queen Gedrens hot daughter? ESCAPED? KILLED? 2) The book 'The Encyclopedia of Fantasy' says Gerden is a lesbian and she hates Sonja cause she wasn't interested in her sexually. WHERE IS THIS PART IN THE FILM I WATCHED. 3) What is the deal with the evil wizard with long black fingernails and his little diamond monitor thing. It has a picture of some topless woman dancing on it. WHY? 4) Towards the end Sonja says to Queen Gedren "Your a man! The talisman will destroy you!" WTF! SHE IS OBVIOUSLY FEMALE! 5) Did I see Sonja's nipple at the start? Y/N?
That is not gedren's daughter, it's her lover. She also DID lust after sonja. Those two things might be what sonja is getting at, that gedren is a lesbian, and the talisman would see her as a man. That doesn't really make much sense, but i think that was what it meant. Kalidor pretty much just lumbered round, being moody. You didn't feel anything for him, he was just there.
No Thomas im not. This is one of my childhood films and I watched it so many times and everytime I watched it I was rooting for Kalidor, not so much Sonja's cause. I saw conan around that time also, so arnie was very much an 'IN' hero. Kalidor is the main attraction because Sonja doest care for him and he's the one who gave her the last moments with her sister by saving her from the goons, one of which, he decapitates. Sonja, baring in mind doesnt really thank him, but he persists. He also takes care of hundreds of Brytag's guys by himself to allow Sonja to escape. He then turns up to kill the 'Machine' in the water and saves them yet again! He is a loner and he has no buisiness helping them, but does it anyway. He roams around on his horse, like at the start with the music playing. If Sonja was the attraction here, the opening music would not have accompanyed Kalidor. We see him first and he keeps saving the day. He wants his hole for his trouble but doesnt mind not getting it because in the process of impressing Sonja he gets to kill hundreds of bad guys in awesome style. Kalidor is the Hero here. Its one of the best ever moments when the 'machine' is causing havoc in the water and Sonja and Tarn are in trouble, and all of a sudden this guy walks down the stares...and its Kalidor. I was a young boy so I guess Kalidor was the coolest guy ever then, but even now Kalidor is still the reason to watch this film!
Wasn't the character in the Red Sonja novel actually Conan not Kalidor? I'm pretty sure that the draw to this film would have been the possibilty of Conan. I'm not 100% on that. Or maybe Red Sonja was just a spin off of Conan, and that has me confused.
Edit....I got this from wikipedia
Arnold Schwarzenegger was originally to have reprised the role of Conan in this film, as the Red Sonja character was a spin-off of the original Conan novels. Ultimately, a new character was created who was essentially Conan in everything but name.
Actually, in the movie Kalidor admits he is the current high lord, the one who was supposed to show up the priestesses' ceremony but was late (probably b/c the bridge was cut down). B/c of his title, he was supposed to ensure that the talisman was destroyed. And that is why he needed to help Sonja.
Oh, and to attempt to answer the questions from the original poster:
1) Probably escapes, but the movie should have shown it.
2) I think Gedren was a lesbian since she wanted Sonja "for herself", according to the Spirit at the beginning of the movie. But, I also think 'Encyclopedia of Fantasy' is a piece of crap. According to Wikipedia, that book also stated that the movie is homophobic and that wizard was gay. I did not see this in the movie at all and I feel it's intellectually dishonest to even make such claims.
3) The wizard had long black fingernails. It's a fantasy movie. Maybe the filmmakers wanted to make him look different? I don't know. I don't think he was meant to be gay. And that was a vision of a topless woman dancing, though it's kind of hard to tell she's a woman b/c she doesn't have the most defined curves. I think that scene was just meant to be comedic. I thought it was kind of funny.
4) Sonja says "you're mad", but the actress's harsh accent could explain your misinterpretation of the line.
5) I think I saw Sonja's nipple at the beginning too. Her right one to be exact.
Right, I never disagreed with the possibility of Gedren being a lesbian. The Spirit's comments on how Gedren wanted Sonja "for herself" seem to indicate that. I don't know why you're restating what you and I have already written previously.
I don't mean to be that guy, BUT (!) at around the 40 minute mark, Gedren is the one that lifts the talisman onto its holder in the room full of lights. It was a good theory though. I have a feeling that bridgitte f'd up her line, or just can't talk straight and was supposed to say you are mad, and by that point the talisman was pretty much destroying everything, so that was just her making a safe assumption.
and in answer to original question (#4).... yes that is. I really can't stand her acting but I will never turn down looking at a nip slip.
I swear I just got this movie and was watching it while surfing IMDB, and that is the only reason I even noticed any of this. Later.
1. You see her near the end of the film running out of frame.......it doesn't really show if shh survives or not. BTW, it's her lover not daughter, IMO.
2. At the very beginning there's a small prologue that explains that RS refueses her 'advances' and Gedren kills her family and lets her soldiers 'violate' RS.
3. I didn't get the topless women dancing thing..........I guess it's just that he's a wizard and can make strange things happen. A bit of T and A never hurts a movie.
4. As mentioned, she says 'You're MAD'......but it does indeed sound like 'You're a man'........just Nielsen's accent.
You DID see her nipple. Gedren was alled "Mad", not a man. The hot chick is Gedren's Hand Maiden, it says in the credits. But I DO believe they're was a little lesbian subplot to the whole Gedren thing.
Truly one of the greatest question-threads I've seen at imdb. Arnold is the reason for that I recently bought this movie on VHS. But he should have been Conan still, instead of Calidor, but he still kicked some ass though. Lotsa people killed.
The producers seemed insecure about letting Sonja stand on her own, so they added in the three male characters. Personally, I don't think any of them are terribly necessary and I'd rather she just be foregrounded. A female sidekick like in "Xena" would've worked nicely too.
When I came on IMDB and saw all the confusion over this I was mystified. I thought it was very obvious that she was shouting "you are mad!", even if she had to spit it out robotically with an accent. "Ged-ren, you ah Mad!"
And the naked dancing girl on the screen, I thought that was a moment of humor. Obviously that was the last "channel" the wizard had his magic tivo set to, and got caught when he turned it back on for Gedren. That was my first thought and I've always chuckled at that scene. The wizard even looks like he got caught watching porno..
1- That wasn't her daughter, it was her sex slave. I imagine she escaped, though she seemed pretty dim, so maybe she got crushed by some rocks.
2- There are several lines in the movie that confirm Gedren wanted Sonja as her partner. Also, when she sees Sonja on the monitor, her face lights up like she just can't contain her lust. She orders her brought to her with "not a scratch on her skin." Yeah.
3- I always assumed, even as a child, that this was what Gedren watched for her own entertainment in her leisure time, and that the wizard accidentally brought up the wrong image. That's why he looks so embarrassed.
4- She says, "You're mad! The talisman will destroy you!"
That was definitely Queen Gedren herself on the monitor. I think she got off on seeing herself dancing like that and showing off her well-developed abs.
1) She escaped and has hidden herself quietly away in numerous unrelated film and TV projects ever since. She was cute, though... By the way - She was neither daughter, nor lover, sex slave or anything of that ilk - She was a Handmaiden, ie a personal attendant/servant sort of role. All self-respecting queens have them... even me!
2) You believe everything you read? Most of these things are just packaged to make a few bucks. Half the info is inaccurate, interpolated, misconstrued or just simply made up. You bought it. That's all the publishers care about.
3) As mentioned, it is a joke. He's supposed to be tuning it to show Red Sonja but his mind is obviously on 'other things'.
4) I also vote for "You're mad".
5) I like to think so, although this is still hotly debated. I wasn't paying that much attention, but it works for my 12-year-old boy mentality :-)
You're You're is a contraction of you are. It has no other uses. This is a 100% rule. If you cannot expand it to you are in your sentence, then it is wrong.
Your The word your sits before another word (usually a noun or a pronoun) to show that it belongs to "you" (e.g., your car, your arm), is of "you" (e.g., your picture, your photograph) or is related to "you" (e.g., your uncle).
