A complete version?

Are there any complete versions on DVD, yet, where the "Dr. Hill hypnotism" plot is included?

reply

Not sure what you mean by a "complete" version, but all three DVD releases so far (original, Millennium, and Ultimate) and the laserdisc of Re-Animator have the alternate hypnotism plotline in the special features section. These "deleted/alternate" scenes were added into the R-rated version to fill time where the more gory parts from the unrated version were removed.

If you mean a DVD with both the R and unrated versions on it, that doesn't exist...yet, although I've put a bug in Anchor Bay's ear to add it to the blu-ray coming out in 2010 for the 25th anniversary of the original film's release.

Hope this helps.

By complete, I mean a totally new cut, with the R-rated and Unrated combined together. The hypnotism subplot adds a lot to the movie, especially in explaining the dean's anger at the boys. Of course, we don't want to miss that great gore, either. I saw it last night at a film fest in Chicago. Gordon was there, but I didn't get a chance to ask him about it.

Yes, there is a version with all of the scenes integrated into it. Although it is an unofficial DVD. It's a fan edit called Re-Animator: Re-Animated. There is a DVD5 version and a DVD9 version available as well as just a dvdrip of it. Here's a link for more info: http://fanedit.org/498/

The scenes showing the Dr Hill hypnotism/svengali subplot are great and ought to have been included in the film. Gale makes those scenes great, and they are not too long nor really distracting, and would have added to the film overall. If you have the laserdisc, you can actually edit them back into the film since you can transfer LD material into an editable format, of course only for your personal enjoyment!

All the other scenes that were cut out were pretty crappy and were left out for good reason.

The director said the scenes were cut for pacing reasons only--they wanted this film to always be moving and he believed those scenes slow things down. I admit that bit does explain why the dean gets so angry but I think the film works just great without them.

I have the Re-Animator-Re-Animated DVD and whomever created the edit did a fantastic job, it does change the feel of the film.
