Question for those that saw it at the cinema in 85 !

If you were lucky enough to see Rambo 2 back in 85, can you please tell about how the experience was like ? Was it crazy, were people cheering, standing up, clapping etc. What scenes got the best response from the audience, please tell about the experience of watching Rambo 2 in a theater in 85.

Well, thanks for the reply, I really wish I was born 5 years earlier, then I would be old enough to get in.

I lucked out somewhat: as a 12-y.o. I went alone--and GOT IN!!! The theater owners didn't care that it was rated "R." It was a ginormous payday for them. It was standing room only, with people sitting in both aisleways and on the floor in front of the first row of seats. I considered myself damn lucky--I sat 5th-6th row center.
The biggest cheer was of course for the climax scene of arrival of POWs by helicopter. Otherwise it was more of a question of what DIDN'T get a response.
I would say that one memorable cheer came when Rambo says *beep* You" to the Russian Lt. Col.
Good Times!!!

I saw it in the theater in '85 and it was a riot! People were cheering, booing, and just having a great time getting into the movie. Biggest cheer was when Rambo said into the mic "Murdoch, I'm coming to get YOU!" and proceeded to kick ass all over the place.

At the end when Rambo is telling Trautman "I want what they want ..." someone in the theater yelled out "pussy!" :) Everyone was laughing so hard I had to watch the movie again to know what exactly it was Rambo wanted!

I saw it in the cinema in '85, and people were yelling at the screen & cheering. When Rambo said "Murdoch, I'm coming to get you!" people gasped "Whoa". A few seconds later, people were cheering as he kicked butt. We cheered when he blew away the scared soldier with the explosive arrow. When he took the M-60 off the helicopter back at base, people were yelling "All riiight!, Whoaaaa". At the end when Rambo is telling Trautman "I want what they want..for our country to love us as much as we love it", a Black lady yelled "Amen to that". A few seconds later, several women gasped "OMG" as they saw his muscled physique from the rear.

I saw it at a drive in theatre. I was 10. My mom took me it. First Blood was the opener.

That sounds AWESOME. I actually got to see Rambo III at a drive-in. It was the last night it was open before they tore it down in '89. I was little, but still remember my dad tuning into the sounds on the radio of our old Buick.

I saw it on its opening night in '85 at the theater in Frostburg, Maryland. I remember it was on a Thursday because the next day was Friday and we were on some out of school event and all the other kids were jealous that I'd already seen it. Anyway I was 10 but my brother's 7 years older than me so he got me in. His girlfriend at the time was also with us and she was a Stallone fanatic, had like photo scrapbooks of him and everything.

Anyway it was a great experience, and thanks to this thread for bringing back the memories for me. It was a packed house and the audience was fully into it. As for audience participation I remember gasps and cheers when Rambo came out of the mudbank and slit the Vietnamese soldier's throat. But by far the biggest reaction was to "Murdoch, I'm comin' for YOU," with the place basically going nuts.

This is what makes me chuckle when people dismiss Rambo II these days and call it patriotic crap (funny given that the US government is clearly portrayed as the villain and sells Rambo out) and a bad movie and etc. But then this is typical in our current dismissive, knee-jerk culture. Half the people that dismiss this film have probably never seen it, and I'd bet none of them got to see it in the theater. Rambo is perfect for what it is -- a finely crafted action movie.

i saw this when i was 10 in the theater. 30 years later i don't remember what the audience response was; what i do remember is thinking the opening his eyes while hiding in the mud scene was one of the most awesome things 10-year old me ever saw.

I saw it in the theatre when I was 12. I had seen First Blood in the theatre as well, having been so lucky that my next door neighbour talked the lady at the ticket booth into letting me in.

Both movies made a tremendous impact on me and I remember telling a friend at the time that I thought Rambo: First Blood Part II was the best movie ever made. I remember being awestruck by all the action being piled up in the second half of the movie. I don't remember any audience reactions (this was in the Netherlands, where it's not a custom to cheer or yell or applaud during a movie).

Now, all these years later, First Blood still gets my blood pumping. I consider it to be one of the greatest action films of all time. Rambo on the other hand hasn't aged that well. It was very influential on Hollywood action cinema, but to me it just isn't that exciting to watch anymore. It just doesn't have the gritty, realistic feel to it that First Blood has.
