Fred Astaire

Did anyone else think that maybe, right in the final shots of the movie, somehow Fred Astaire might glance at Cecilia? Or wink? Don't get me wrong, I loved the ending, but I just thought that would've been cool.

But that would still have given Cecila hope and director Woody Allen wanted a sad ending. Cecilia had her chance but missed it.

He's taking the knife out of the Cheese!
Do you think he wants some cheese?

I think Fred Astaire and the scenes from Top Hat bring a sense that really, nothing has changed for Cecilia and it won't. It is more bittersweet than sad. After everything, after the hope of escape from her miserable life, her abusive relationship, a lost chance to go to Hollywood, Cecilia still has something; she has the dreams found in movies, an escpape into the world of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers where everything is perfect and beautiful and all endings are happy ones. The last shot of the film is a close up of Cecilia enrapt with what is happening on the screen (perhaps just as we are, watching Cecilia and escaping from our real lives) and a smile begins to form on her face. She still has the movies.
