Did anyone think the accents were really off?

I know we have been spoiled with the realistic nature of the Sopranos and mob movies that came after this one (Casino,Goodfellas, ect), but i feel like this movie really failed with the actors accents of italian people. Will Hickey's accent went in and out the whole time he spoke and Jack Nicholson sounded retarded. They needed an Italian-American on this set.

Agreed, especially Houston and she won an oscar.

Although she did look like a very thick italian in the movie.

Nicholson though, really annoyed me, because i think when Nicholson acts like Nicholson, he sounds italian anyway! He should have played himself like he usually does.

reply

Agreed, the accents were not even close to Italo-American.

The accents are absolutely deplorable. This movie would be laughed out of theaters if it came out today. I'm surprised it wasn't then. I've thought for 12 years that Jack Nicholson's accent in The Departed was atrocious (having grown up in MA), but this was even more horrible, and I watched Ironweed and Reds (amazing performance by Nicholson, for which he would've won if he'd had as much screen time John Gielgud) within a week of this viewing of Prizzi's Honor, so I had a strong sense of how he talks normally and how he doesn't. His accent in Prizzi's is awful. His performance is awful.

The movie is so good I didn’t give a damn. I feel sorry for you if accents distract you from a masterful black comedy like this.
