Gideon
Im namen my 1st born baby boy after him
I love Gideon too, but I don't think they'd be able to bring out a film like that now, the makers would be accused of encouraging children to speak to strangers and run off in the middle of the night to meet them etc etc.
share7 months later, here I am again! :) I find it quite funny that he was in a film called Never Talk to Strangers! (1995)
shareI remember when this film was first out, there was alot of upheaval over the notion of a man in a long black trench coat talking to kids and getting them to go with him. Keeping things secret and such. The comments were valid and someone high up must have decided not to risk any problems because the film was seemingly kept under radar. Never hear nor heard much about it. Too bad really because dispite that I think Gideon is such a great character and have always loved Harry Stanton. This is truly a holiday classic and I watch it and cry every single year. I saved it from my kids until they were old enough to deal with the themes of death, strangers and all that so we could discuss it straight out and they would understand about Hollywood concepts and angel ideas...Now we all enjoy it each year and we cherish it. I hope more people will see. So long as they know to be a little careful with their kids so it doesn't leave a misguided impression, like that believing in Santa could bring someone back from the dead, etc...Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas.
shareI agree, waanief.
I saw this movie when I was eight, and the role of Gideon always stuck out in my memory. Although now older, I wondered about the black trench coat man significance.
In these distressing days, being cautiousis given top priority to the point of sometimes being just plain anti-social.
It's easy to forget that sometimes comparitive strangers can unexpectedly be good samritans.
As for the Hollywood concept of angels ...really warped IMO.
The worst in my memory being "City of Angels". bleh!
It'd be nice to see this on the movie channels again. It was a pretty decent christmas movie.
And Merry Christmas!

This film is certainly one of my favorites too. Regarding your comment that it would be hard to make this film today, I'd like to mention that the film came in for some criticism from reviewers when it first came out. I seem to recall that Time Magazine expressed the fear that the film might encourage children to speak with scruffy strangers like Harry Dean Stanton's Gideon!
sharesorry, I wasn't born when it was released so I wasn't aware of that
shareI think there probably could be a movie similiar to this one made in this day and age. Of course I wholeheartedly understand how it can set a bad example to give children the impression that when adults they don't know who look normal enough approach them when no when else is around and say they are supernatural beings (and you know children will believe anything) they are telling the truth. I completely discourage that as I believe in promoting the well-being and safety of every child. However then both the film industry and we as viewers need to respect human diversity and the feelings, customs, and perspectives of one another. If anyone feels it does not defy moral sense to create a motion picture of this sort and make it public they should not be prevented from doing so, and when they do it is the job of the rest of us to teach our younger generations the differences between what is fictional and what is real.
Long live the 80's!
I see what you all are saying. I loved this movie as a kid, and never thought anything of running off with Gideon into the night. As an adult and as a parent when I watched it again, that did jump out at me. But as long as you talk to your kids about that concern, this is a great movie, still my favorite holiday film, and I love it dearly. Harry Dean Stanton is awesome, and I loved the character of Gideon. Enjoy the movie for the ride it is and take something good away from it - there's plenty there!
