Van Damme vs Bruce Lee

First I wanna ask if anyone knows what disciplines they use? And also an opinion on who you think would win of the two if they were in a real fight.

reply

Bruce!

reply

I do not think that Van Damme would stand a chance (in a fight) against Bruce Lee. I do not think that anyone would stand a chance (in a fight) against Bruce Lee.

reply

Bruce, without a doubt. Martial arts was Lee's life, with working out and movies right behind. Van Damme seems more movie focused than martial arts focused.

reply

but hey, van damme has more weight

reply

I heard that Bruce Lee weighed around 130 pounds, and that he could bench press almost 4 times his weight. I heard that he could bench press around 380 pounds.

reply

But... 380 pounds isn't even 3 times 130...
380 is at least remotely believable, but 4 times his weight, not so much...

reply

So did Chuck Norris!!

reply

Ok, what kind of question is this. Broce would bitch slap vann damme. I like van damme but really, bruce was the man. hed wopp the *beep* out of seagal, van damme, and chuck. maybe you should see a film called a warriors jurney, after you see thatyour questions would ne laid to rest

This question was brought up a few times in some martial arts magazines i own. The editors (all martial arts masters) said that Bruce Lee would kick his ass but would have a bit of a hard time doing it, giving Van Damme´s weight and muscle advantage.

reply

understandably bruce lee is rated as a great martial artist that he was but do you ever wonder if he has been overated somewhat i talk to some people and they seem to think he was a god literally like he could take on 10 armed van dammes and dodge bullets etc. I often wonder how people like lennox lewis or professional sumo wrestlers(im talking the big ones like yokozunos(sp)) would fare against him because obviously bruce lee could run rings around all sumo wrestlers but if one of them properly got him held tight bruce would not have the strength to break out (i understand his technique was impeccable but if he was fully chokeholded for example) or maybe if dolph lundgren faced him and got a few good blows on bruce (i never got the feeling bruce could take many punches ) it could have been different

ok enough of my ranting im going to give a list of fighters and i want to ask all of you what order would you put them in in terms of fighting ability ok heres mine by the way imagine if they were all in there prime

Bruce lee going on mostly his speed and his legend status
chuck norris hes fast and hes big
dolph lundgren and van damme(cant choose lundgren has weight and reach so probably him but what you dont see about van damme in his films is that he is a superb floor and grapple fighter apparently)
steven seagal apparently a major movie actor not so great at real fighting from what i read despite him being perhaps the highest rated dan black belt out of all of them not that owning a belt makes you hard as some bare knuckle boxers could probably take on some black belts etc.
feel free to add more

i think Van Damme could take him

Bruce Lee:
It's hard to tell how well Lee would go against these guys, watching some of his earlier movies I tend to feel that he is overrated. But just judging by his dedication and reputation I will put him at the top.

Steven Seagal:
Seagal is incredibly underrated as a martial artist, he is the first westerner to open an Aikido dojo in Japan, this was no minor feat also considering how racist the country was at the time. Watch: Above the Law and Out For Justice to see his strength there is also videos on youtube of him in Japan doing Aikido which are quite impressive. I personally think that he could give Lee a solid challenge,if not win.

Van Damme:
JCVD is very skilled at kicks but as a martial artist not so much, he has power, flexibility and huis body overall seems extremely strong but I think mainly he is a showman with strong kicks who would do well in a fight but only has a slight chance of winning.

Dolph Lundgren:
Very strong and a former champion but basically the same as Van Damme without being as impressive.

Chuck Norris:
Very overrated, Norris is only rated so highly because he was one of the first of his kind ( a western martial artist) his kicks are sloppy but at times he has his moments, he is skilled for an average martial artist but not in the league of his other movie counterparts.

Sho Kosugi:
A glorified stuntman who is basically a Jack of all trades master of none. He has main black belts, but with Kosugi you have to read between the lines judging by his supposed life story, and his so called Martial Arts skill. He is a great acrobat with some good weapon skills but not much else that can make him b regarded as a good fighter.

Im the biggest van damme fan in the world but Bruce Lee would win, even though van damme is the man. Bruce Lee trained allday every day and that was his life, Van Damme had hardcore disciplines!

reply

I know for a fact that Bruce Lee develop Jeet Kune Do but before that he knew Gung fu and some other disciplines i cant think of right now. As for Van damme im not 100% sure but i believe he uses Tae Kwon Do but dont quote me on that.

reply

Bruce Lee trained in Wu style Tai Chi Chuan, Wing Chun, Western boxing, Jun Fan Gung Fu, Jujitsu, and developed Jeet Kune Do.

Van Damme trained shotokan karate, bodybuilding, ballet, Taekwondo, Muay Thai, and kickboxing.

I won't begin to guess who would win as they both have very different styles of fighting. Bruce Lee was the first big martial artist in hollywood and most people assume first is best. I love them both, I'm not going to say I think Bruce Lee is as good as all the hype though. It would be one hell of a fight to see.

reply

It would be a joke bruce lee would kill him.

Jun Fan Kung Fu means "Bruce Lee Kung Fu". Jun Fan is Bruce's chinese name.

This thread is hilarious.Bruce would kick the crap out of every fighter mentioned in this thread.

Bruce Lee's films look very dated now,and the fighting in his films (from alot of the other fighters)looks very dated, but Bruce's fighting hasn't dated one bit. He's still the greatest IMO.

It's a joke to even compare other on screen fighters to him, because you can see in Van Dammes'films for instance the amount of quickly edited shots put together.Watch a Bruce Lee fight and the camera shows exactly what he is doing without any fast editing. You can see head to foot shots of him doing his thing. The speed of his punches and kicks were magnificent.Something like seven per second. And the camera was slowed down quite a bit when he was fighting to fully capture his delivery on film, and he still looks fast.

The only question about Bruce against any of these guys would be,could Bruce take any blows? It doesn't matter how good you are if you can't take the hits. And if Van Damme or Norris or whoever got a few blows in,he would have definetly felt them with his slight build. But it's a question that's irrelevent really because it wouldn't come to that.Even people who have questioned just how great he was have never denied the agility and power of him,so he would have taken out Van Damme,Norris and whoever else's weak points before they knew what was happening.

reply

Bruce Lee would have wiped the floor with Van Damme and then some.

I am curious (some posts here mentioning it) how much weight advantage would Van Damme have had over Bruce Lee?

Even if it was a few stone (say 40 pounds or so) I still think Bruce Lee would beat Van Damme easily.

(not a good comparison I know) but David Haye beat a bigger Dell Boy Chisora so weight does not automatically mean victory.

I have no idea but maybe Bruce Lee Vs Jet Li might be or a more competitive fight (?)

reply

Van Damme had crazy speed and strength and his technique was of a high standard in his younger days! he could give Bruce a competitive match

reply

My question is how would in his prime Royce Gracie would have fared against all of the above.

He has beaten martial artists of many different styles, He has beaten men that outweighed him by over 100 lbs.

Opinions?

reply

Technique always overcomes certain speed and weight, the secret is to put yourself in the position to manipulate joints, execute locks or submissions before your opponent utilises his speed and mass.

reply

Bruce Lee would take out Van Damme in under a minute.
