I didn't get it... is it worth watching the extended version?

I watched this movie a couple weeks ago with my wife (who said I HAD to see it).

I thought Tim Curry's make-up was cool, as were some of the other effects. I couldn't follow the story of this movie for the life of me though.

There were so many scenes that just kind of happened without any context surrounding them at all.

I hear there is an extended version, is it worth watching over the one that is on Netflix?

The characters are fleshed out a bit more and the original Jerry Goldsmith score is much better. The electronic Tangerine Dream score keeps it grounded in the 80s and that, along with the Bryan Ferry and Jon Anderson songs, make it feel like an extended music video. I love TD, BF and JA (cripes, I saw him in concert last winter), but their contributions do not help the film. They are best appreciated away from the film. The extended cut has a very European feel to it and makes the experience more Grimm like.

Yes, but it's not only the characters that are fleshed out more...it's also the film itself.

Of course, which is why I also mentioned the score and the entire Grimm-like feel of the entire film. Scenes that were either awkwardly edited and that edited way too much hurts the film.

The OP is absolutely right. The Theatrical Cut makes little to no sense in many parts, because most to all of the context has been butchered out of them.

The Extended/Director's Cut fixes a lot of those problems, gives a ton more context for many scenes, and is a vastly, vastly, vastly better film than the one you saw.
