Why isn't this film rated higher?

I am talking about the Director's Cut version of this film. It is such a unique, beautiful looking film. Certainly cheesy acting, but that adds to its charm IMO. The makeup effects are brilliant and flawless, and the sets are magnificent. When I first visited the page I expected the film's rating to be much higher. This is also not nostalgia based, I am a 22-year-old male and saw this film recently for the first time. One of my personal favorites now that I have seen it.

I agree. The makeup, costumes, set designs. The scene with the unicorns deserves an Oscar. It was so beatiful and perfect. It's exactly the perfect scene for the Fantasy genre. Tim Curry amazing as usual. I loved everything about his costume and makeup. The script is somewhat lacking but I still find this an enjoyable film.

Because it's a bit over the top with the actor's performances. Gump, one of the forest imps, is a shirtless boy with pointed ears who is directed to act like a character from a fantasy painting. Modern audiences aren't college educated, and when they think of a fantasy film, they don't think of something like this, which is essentially a fantasy melodrama.

So, most people who've seen it think it silly, and to that extent, kind of stupid. Most people are not fans of fantasy, but workaday people who who watch police shows and sports. Something like Legend is a bit out there for them.
