The original 'Brokeback Mountain' !

The knuckleheads that love Brokeback Mountaian and insist 'their' precious film was snubbed due to homophobia should note this film -- it won critical acclaim and rave over TWENTY YEARS ago!

Kiss of the Spider Woman didn't win Best Picture either. It also didn't win almost every precursor best picture award leading up to the academy awards, like Brokeback Mountain did. Also, the plotlines to these two movies are very different. So... what's your point?

Warlok1, I agree.

The storylines may be different on the surface, but the sexual theme is much like Brokeback: One man who is gay, another who isn't, and, well, we know what happens.
No, I don't think Valentin was gay or "became gay", but there are obvious similarities. I just watched it with a group of friends, and we all kept saying how this was an early Brokeback Mountain, and how surprised we were that it was made as early as in the eighties.

Hmmm... so you're saying only one of the guys in BBM was gay? Guess I missed that.

Valentin sleeps with Molina as an act of kindness. He's not in love with Luis nor is he sexually attracted to him. It's his way of finally being able to repay Luis Molina's kindness, the one that he resents at first. And Molina in turn doesn't betray Valentin, as he was supposed to, and for the first time chooses a harsh realistic act over a pleasant, idle fantasy world.

Basically, KotSW is a movie about two men who are complete opposites, who grow to care and respect each other (even love, in Molina's case) and who find in the other man exactly what they are lacking. It's a story about how people grow, not how they fall in love. It's a story about each man's personal journey to redemption through the other man.

Brokeback Mountain, on the other hand, is about falling in love. More specifically, it's about two men who are both gay and both repressing it (though in different ways and to different degrees), who fall in love (not just lust) against all odds and who find themselves in the claws of tragedy... A Greek tragedy even, where no matter what you do, you're doomed. In their case, if they don't openly express their love for another man, they have to hide and fight for it and it still is in danger of going stale because of all the lies that surround it, but if they do become more open about it (as we hear Jack tried living with another man towards the end of the movie), the homophobic society they live in can't stand it and wants a price to be paid, in blood.

Those are two entirely different stories and just because both movies are gay themed doesn't mean they have that much in common.
