Police shootup

I didn't quite see the point of the police shooting at the car, the lady in it, and Molina. There were enough of them. Surely the police idea would have been to capture Molina redhanded and take the girl for questioning and use against Valentin. The burst of gunfire, alerting Molina and the girl didn't ring true if you consider what the police end game would have been. Anybody got any ideas on this. BTW, haven't read the book...

Hard to tell why they did that.

The way it looked, Lidia (the girl in the car) had a gun in her hand, hidden by a newspaper. She seemed to raise it a little when Molina was talking to her, as though she was aiming. When the cops suddenly sprang forward, she's the one who shot first.

"Look, Daddy, I'm the jealous jockey!"
"I'm a torso!"
