Let me just say that I love this movie! It's really really bad but I have seen it at least 20 times and I own the video. It will be a great day when it is released on DvD. The acting isnt that bad but the special effects, well... they are bad. The punk music, Christopher Lee, and the locations are great in this film. They use several scenes over and over again, I suppose to save on costs. This film is only for bad B-movie lovers or werewolf movie lovers.
I agree! I have seen this movie so many since I was younger. It still scares the crap out of me, even though the effects are ridiculous. I love the music too. Very appropriate for this movie.
Sorry guys, I love bad movies, and i wanted to like this one (Christopher Leeeeeee.....), but damn, i was bored! You know what it needed? More popping eyes! More cool dwarves! More Christopher Lee in crap sunglasses! More hairy werewolf breasts!
I was surprised I endured the whole thing when I was in high school. There was one hilarious moment when I said aloud, " In the next scene if she's smoking a cigarette and he's cleaning his gun, I wanna leave." Sure enough, next scene gratuitous puffing and pistol maintainence. All seven people in the audience started laughing. The movie is so bad it is laughable.
I bought the DVD the day it came out, and ever since then, when it's quiet, I hear..."In the pale pale light, the pale pale light of the moonglow"...it's fantastic.
I loved The Howling, I still love Sybil Danning, so you KNOW I was all about this movie when it came out. Saw it in the theatre and loved every second of it. Had it on VHS, now I own it on DVD. The world is good.
It wasn't very full at all, maybe 30%. The crowd mostly didn't like it, but a buddy of mine was there with his girlfriend and she was REAL uncomfortable with the nudity. He confided in me later that he loved the show, and I turned him on to a bunch of Sybil's other films, and I converted another to the Cult of Danning.
My cousin and I snuck this one out from the video store when we were both underage and everyone who watched it thought it was the best film ever. Yes it's cheap, trashy and silly, to be honest it's one of the first comedy/horror flicks that I can think of.
And it rightly diserves it's place it the bottom 100 even though the Howling 3 is even better/worse (the one set in Australia that came out a year after Crocodile Dundee) but I truly LOVE this film to death.
And we got to see Sybil Danning's boobies...and again...and again at the end. Titanium entertainment! :-)
I think this film is a true work of profound and important cinematic art, a real tour-de-force of exquisitely artful and exceptional filmmaking which will be recognized in the years to come as the "Citizen Kane" of cheesy 80's werewolf schlock flicks. Sybil Danning's beautiful and bountiful frequently bared breasts alone ensure that this movie milestone will truly withstand the test of time and stand tall as a towering artistic achievement for infinity.
Yes this movie has its cheesiness but it is a classic 80's style movie though that makes it so great! I do not even remember seeing this being shown in previews on TV back in 1985. I was 13 years old when this movie came out.
I guess I must not have paid much attention to the previews you know but remember seeing this at the video store and knew it would be scary but it really is not scary at all. It is just hysterical to watch you know.
My first experience in seeing this movie was on The USA Network back in the 90's when they had great programming at that time. Now they do not have that good of programming on anymore. It is just crap in my opinion.
I'm sorry guys. But I have to say they just don't make bad films like this anymore. They really don't.
I laughed, I cried, I cringed in fear. This was crap cinema at it's best.
Even though it made you cling to your pillow and check your watch at the same time, you could tell a lot of effort went into it. I agree with NY Times Magazine when they wrote the time when bad movies were made without the intention of being bad, are long gone.
I mean come on...Killer Klowns from Outer Space and Howling II: These films aren't just trash. They're high quality trash.
I have to agree with you on what you are saying about thsi movie. I liked the movie especially just to watch the blonde werewolf. She was smoking hot! I loved how at the end of the movie they had her tearing off that top off from her over a large number of times. It was great!
I have to admit I am a breast and butt man and when she flashed her breasts I was hooked onto that movie screen ot TV. LOL
This is a great bad movie. One of my favorite crap-tastic movies of all time. When it is playing late at night on Flix or TMC I have to record it. Sometimes I can make it 20 minutes in after that first kill with the black werewolf chick killing the punkers in the wherehouse, and sometimes I just need to see Christopher Lee talking in space with the great gothic imagery and that song. But every time I do I laugh and think about how awesome the 80's really were when bad movies could still be made and still get theatrical releases without Paris Hilton.
Exactly about the 80's! I mean back then they would release some of the cheesiest movies that I have ever seen but I loved it because it would be bad but it would be all so good to watch too. I love the scene at the end of the movie where the beautiful blonde werewolf is removing her top and flashing her breasts. Now that was awesome and how many times that they have her do that. I just loved it!
I also miss watching USA UP ALL NIGHT on the weekends late at night because this was one of the movies that they would show on the weekends and late at night as well. You do not see anyone showing movies like this anymore at all on cable TV. It would be nice to watch again though.
Yes that is very true that we can watch Rhonda Shear in her AHH Bra informercials, but it is not the same as her hosting USA UP ALL NIGHT though. Joe Bob Briggs was very good as a host of Monster Vision. Yes Elvira's come back was short lived because it did not last but a year I believe it was. It is a shame about that though because I would catch it on THIS TV on Friday nights and then turn around and watch it once again on early Sunday morning.
It's certainly bad, but ultimately it's just very bad instead of great. The art direction was inspired at times, and I loved the punk band. 4/10 stars from me.
