There is that scene at the begining where the whole student body is shown nude during a swim class. There are some distant frontals.

Distant frontals ? Yeah, I was afraid of that, thanks for the confirmation. Still don't think it deserves the R. It might have done a lot better without it.

Until 30/40 years ago it was common for men & boys to swim nude in schools and YMCAs when there were no females around. No one thought anything of it. The swimsuits availible produced alot of lit that clogged filters. Besides this was the 60s in a few years all those boys would have to endure regular group physicals for the draft board. For what it's worth girls always wore suits even when no males were present (ladies are supposed to be modest).

At Notre Dame, guys swam with their jockstraps on. Again, an all boys school.

I bought the DVD shortly after its release last Summer and saw the theatrical version of the movie for the first time in 15 years. I think the main reason for the R rating is not the nudity but rather the language and crude sexual humor. The F word is used quite a bit and there are plenty of jokes about masturbation. And Rooney uses the word *beep* dozens of times. I'd forgotten about the extent of the profanity and was a little embarrassed that my nine-year old son was watching with me, though he likes the movie very much.

None of this is a criticism of the movie, which very well might be my favorite movie of all time. It's just an observation about why it received an R rating. I think the rating system does more harm than good but based on MPAA standards, I think this movie is a mild to moderate R. Just my opinion.

When the movie came out, I don't think there were PG-13 ratings. Only G, PG, R, and X. Under that ratings system, I thought the f-word gave a movie an automatic R rating. And Rooney used the f-word a lot!

I think before we had PG-13, three uses of the f-word got you an R rating.

"PG-13" was introduced in 1984 and this film is listed as 1985.

Yeah, because the movie "The Last Dragon" (1985) was PG-13 and I can't remember if anyone said the F-word in that movie. They may have...but there was violence in "The Last Dragon" and it only got PG-13.

It is funny, cause in Europe, like France, it wouldn't be even rated that high. It would probably pass for something similar to PG.

I believe it deserved an "R"rating based on the frequency of profainity. Rooney did use the "F' word alot but he also used "GD" almost every time he opened his mouth. Also, while nothing was shown, there were 2 shots in the movie that it was very heavily implied that one student was maturbating. I am still amazed that so many uses of the 'F' word warrants an "R" rating but the use of "GD" doesn't seem to matter. In any case....I think it deserved the rating based on these reasons. I would never allow my 13 year old to watch this movie. Which is too bad because this is a very good film.

The number of instances when they used the f-bomb alone garnered this film an R-rating.

The R rating was definitely for the profanity, mostly the great deal of use of the F word by Dillon's character
