The hellfire and damnation speech.

The Priest who gave the hellfire speech about lust was totally unrealistic. I was raised in the Catholic Church and I never heard anyone give a speech like that. I know, I went to Catholic School and my father was a former priest and he said that scene was unrealistic!!

its supposed to be funny... i thought that was obvious...

One of the funniest things about this part is that the priest is trying to put it in the heads of those youngsters that although they have socials (as we called it when I went to catholic school), they do not condone the idea of lust. As if to say, "lust is not allowed here, neither is the thought of sex". Okay, why have coed dances then? The anger and emotion of the priest is amusing because it is so contrived.

reply

A lot of my family went to catholic school as well and said it was overblown but it wasn't far off from what they may have said back then. I think it just depends where you went.

reply

It may be a reference to the hellfire speech in Joyce's A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man. Maybe read a book once in a while.

yeah, 9 years is a long time, but in the absence of the post being locked for replies...

you've attached lust/sex to the social as if it "must" occur, and if it "must" well then why is the church preaching against it. does this mean that bingo must not be played because someone there might have greed? why have kneelers because someone is getting lazy (sloth)?

the point being, while i understand that it (sex) does happen, it is very possible to have social interactions with the opposite sex that don't include having sex.

I thought that speech was one of the funniest movie moments of the '80's: "Lutht is the beatht within each and every one of you!" Priceless.

reply

I thought it was funny, even though it's clearly not based in reality. It made me laugh, I love this film.

He spoke more like an evangelical than a priest, i went to catholic school and priests are mostly soft spoken, the ear pulling they do on a student when you get in trouble is true though, i have gotten my ears pulled by priests and Nuns when i did something bad, lol!

reply

It's even crazier they had a Jewish man playing a priest. Wallace Shawn has always been a great comic actor

Can't remember the dudes name, but I heard that crap all the time.

It's absurd that some religious people think that sex is a sin .It's the reason we all exist in the first place, lol !.I can understand cheating being a sin though, whether you are married to someone,or just going out with them. And i can understand sex with someone you don't love being a sin,but not with someone you do love !.

the definition between love and lust is pretty thin sometimes.

I don't think they were striving for realism.

reply

Wouldn't it have been funny if he could have thrown in an "Inconthievable" in there, somewhere???

reply

chill out all you complainers. There was plenty of hellfire and damnation in the bible. It's just the comic exaggeration of that. Relax and enjoy yourselves. I mean enjoy the movie!

As for the person whining about the church being anti-sex, they are NOT! Sex in the married way creates more donors to the collections. It's lust they don't go for. I guess the proper way to turn lust into the right type of sex is practice, practice, practice.

reply

It may have been over the top but the point was real. Catholic schools are very stern about pretty marital or any type of sex out of procreation.

uuuhhhmm, have we forgotten this is not a documentary???? it's over the top...that's why it's called a comedy. Lighten up.

The scene was supposed to be funny and I thought it was hysterical and the best scene in the Movie!!!!

reply

Yeah. It was supposed to be funny - and it was funny. Every Catholic (and non-Catholic) school has its eccentrics and crazies, who are driven by extremist ideologies or just plain personal weirdness. Wallance Shawn's character was simply one of these, and the juxtaposition of his puritanical condemnation and paranoia with the innocence of the church dance was a funny touch.
