UK DVD version: Scene of inscription in pirate ship missing?

I've got the UK DVD version of The Goonies and it looks to be missing a scene from the pirate ship. It is when Andy grabs a rope as she stands and this opens a trapdoor in the ceiling in which there is an inscription. The next scene is Mikey smashing the boards and climbing up into One Eyed Willy's den. I'm sure I've seen a version of the film where the inscription is read.

Is this scene cut in all versions and, if not, why is it cut from the UK version?
What does the inscription say?

It was shown on British TV at some point (late 80s?) in a version which had extra scenes now available as extras on the dvd/bluray. It was years ago, pre dvd. I wish i'd taped it to vhs. I'm assuming it was a print of an early cut sent by mistake.
I've seen a few people mention this on various forums. Maybe at some point a home recorded vhs copy will appear on the internet.

Just watched the UK DVD myself and was also curious about this scene. They uncover an important looking inscription but then bust through it.
