What beach/city is the final scene in fletch filmed at?

Thank you

Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. I'm not sure exactly which beach, but Copacabana would be the logical choice.

When I first saw this movie in the theaters, I figured that Rio scene was just shot on the strand in LA like the rest of the beach scenes and I didn't pay much attention to the details. (Why would they fly an entire production unit down to Rio to film a 30 second scene).

But, seeing this movie again more recently, they're definitely in Rio, you can see Sugarloaf mountain in the background and the skyline is unmistakeable. So, I'm guessing it went like this:
"Chevy, they're offering 2.5million + 1% of the back end"
"Hmm, make it 3million and move the last scene to Rio so I can get a first class trip out of it"
"Done, and you don't even have to be funny, the script will take care of that"
"Being not-funny isn't going to be a problem"

Thank you for the details. I was in Rio and walked Copacabana last year, so I had a renewed interest in this scene, and certainly felt as though I was channeling Fletch at that moment.

That said, I couldn't remember Rio being specifically mentioned in the film (although no doubt I'm sure it is), I could only remember hearing "South America", and wasn't sure if they perhaps went to Buenos Aires or Rio in the end.

I do agree, by memory, it does appear to be Copacabana as opposed to Ipanema, another 'logical' choice.

I would imagine they flew a skelaton crew down there, off season in winter (it was cloudy and deserted), and Fletch appeared to be filmed in the summer (in hte Northern hemisphere)

I had heard from someone who had seen an early cut of 'Fletch' at a sneak preview years ago, and apparently there was a scene shot on the beach in Rio that involved some sort of a shootout that ended up being cut out, but I've never been able to verify that.

Hmmm a shoot out would have been very tacked on.
Maybe he did actually give out the credit card number.

Which got me to wondering: Would it be necessary to send a crew to Rio? It was so short, couldn't they just fly Chase and Wheeler-Nicholson down there and hire a Braxilian crew for a day? I'm sure Brazilians are quite capable of filming a 30-second scene.

One thing that bothered me was the fact that the weather during that scene was overcast. Couldn't they wait for the sunshine for which Rio has frequently?

reply

Yep, it's Copacabana. The funny thing is that there's a lot of drug business going on at that beach.

reply

They mention Renato Aragão Produções Cinematográficas in the credits, although no other Brazillian name mentioned.
The overhead shot seems like Barra-da-Tijuca. Final dialogue seems to happen somewhere to the right. Maybe it is Copacabana (filmmakers don't want to show something that average viewer might not know about).
I am on 30% sure that this scene was forged with backdrop.

reply

It could've been footage lifted from another film.

reply

bit off topic BUT: I was expecting to see the Sally Ann Cavanaugh at least once during the movie especially at the end, the 'denouement'.

It's Rio for real! The scene in which Chavy Chase is walking on the beach is truely in Copacabana. I've just watched the film now in a perfect blu ray original copy. It doesn't seem to be a scenario (and I'm speaking as a brazilian and Rio de Janeiro's resident). The take from the air could have probably been shot by Renato Aragão produções, who, by the way, was a circus clown in the begining of his career and now he still manages a comedy tv show for kids ("Os Trapalhões"). Tchau pal!

I worked with several Brazilians from Sao Poalo (and I learned some of the language - but I can't spell it!), they told me about some interesting things including Carnivale and chupacabra.
