Chase's best performance

To me this is his best work...

He's a joke machine in this. Plus, he manages to deliver some dramatic nuanced moments in the jail cell with Joe Don Baker and with the beach scenes and even in the news room with his editor. It's kind of an interesting movie that sort of shows the old school world of mid 80s investigative journalism.

i would have to agree. i am a big chevy fan, from saturday night live to community... i thought i watched fletch way back , but honestly never sat down an just watched. i have been seeing fletch recommended as a comedy on IMDb. so after running out of "good" comedies, i just watched it last night. i kinda feel guilty for not watching it sooner.
Fletch was funny , had good story , not too over the top. and a star that can pull off humor like this. it is different, -- maybe i am labeling it wrong but to me ... this is what i consider good high brow humor.
And it held up well over time . just as funny today as in the '80's .
easy 7/10. highly recommend. possibly chevy's best work.

As If!!

I think he was perfectly cast for this movie, by which I mean that the sense of humor in the Fletch novels seems to match perfectly the Chevy Chase comedic style. I agree, this is his best work.
