While the events in "Flesh+Blood" take place just after the medieval period, it could be categorized as a medieval flick. It takes the general setting & color of “The Last Valley” and mixes-in the music & tone of “Conan the Barbarian” with genius Basil Poledouris scoring both (although this score is nowhere near as notable). The film’s brutal grit and vulgarities influenced “Rob Roy” and the hole-up-in-a-castle plot was recycled in “Iron Clad." If you favor any of these movies you’ll probably appreciate "Flesh+Blood” despite some overdone elements, like Susan Tyrrell’s verging-on-lunatic performance.

I watched all those films you mentioned except The Last Valley. Flesh+Blood is my favorite medieval movie and to me nothing comes close to the grittiness and comradeship shown there. I always wanted to see a sequel to this movie since Martin survives at the end and that alone warrants the sequel. Alas now Rutger Hauer passed away otherwise I bet he would’ve signed on had the opportunity presented itself. I watched this movie maybe a hundred times and I can’t get enough of it.

I saw it for the first time a year ago and definitely want to see it again (soon).
