U.S. DVD Release

I was quite surprised upon viewing the recent Region 1 DVD release to find that the U.S. cut differs from that of the U.K.. The 'extra' scenes that it includes under Special Features were already part of the U.K. version. I was sad to see them excluded. Also it contains one short additional scene that was omitted from the U.K. cut - Ben approaching the Thunder Road in the classroom during his final dream.

What I would have liked to have seen on the DVD is several other missing scenes - the boys attending a party at Lori's house, the discovery of Wolfgang's little brother hiding out in the Thunder Road and when Wolfgang gets his own back on the bullies at the end ( the build up to this scene can be glimpsed during the dream imagery at the end, all three boys heading down the school corridoor for the confrontation ).

They basically put the US video version on DVD, and gave the UK scenes that were cut from the US version as extras.

Joe Dante himself said he didn't think the cut stuff was still out there. Every single cut scene sounded like a good one, and it's a shame they got rid of them. I still hold out hope for a special edition with the cut scenes and maybe an Ethan/Joe commentary. But I'm clearly dreaming.

Incidentally. The aspect ratio is slightly screwed on the new DVD, the ball looks like an oval.
