SEQUEL - EXPLORERS 2: The Next Journey???

I know lot of people hate sequals, but I think this movie really needs one to tie up lose ends. Here is what I envision:

I think the sequel would have to have moved through time along with us in order for it to work.

Instead of making it a direct sequel, just make a new movie with the first as a loose back story. You could use the same actors if you want (River excluded I know) and as long as you stayed true to the source material, it could be great.

Remember the old guy from the helicopter...? Hesaid he hadn't had dreams like that since he was a kid. So I interpreted it to mean that the alien kids had tried to contact him when he was a kid and apparently he couldn't make a go of the instructions laid out for him; hence, why he said "way to go kid" as he watched them fly off. This could mean that the "alien kids" age much slower than humans do. If they were kids when the 60 year old sherriff deputy was a child and still kids during the time set in the movie, they would most likely still be kids today.

Now for the sequel....

20 years later and in different parts of the country living completely seperate lives, they all have the dream again only this time its more complex.

Wolfgang, always the scientist, has been working on different aspects of the first discoverey but to no avail. He now works for NASA and has contributed to many advancements in aeronautics and space travel.

Ben has long since given up on becoming an astronaut and now lives in New Mexico near area 51 writing sci-fi alien novels and contributing monthly colemns to UFO magazines. He is down to earth (no pun) but still can't let go of the amazing adventure he had as a child nor can he let go of the childhood sweetheart he let get away.

Lori went on to college and ended up dropping out to get married. She has since divorced and lived her life working as an office clerk in a dead-end job. But she reads every Ben Crandall novel and never misses a column.

Darren has become a drunk, broken down motorcycle repairman that never amounted to much. He still lives in thier hometown and occasionally visits the creek to think and drink.

The movie opens with a dream sequence as does the first and they all soar through a new circuit board. None of them take the dream seriously except Darren who immediately sets out to fish the THUNDER ROAD out of the lake it sank into. He takes the rusted out ship back to his shop and goes to work on it. It is his salvation. He stops drinking and finds meaning and direction with his life. He starts to make phone calls and knock on the doors of his former pals parents trying to track them all down.

After initial reluctance they all come together at Darrens shop. At first they all all him nuts and he starts to believe he might be until he mentions the details in the dream he had. The reactions from the other three suggest they all had the dream too but shrugged it off. Suddenly there is an interest among them all.

Somewhere in here a little romantic development goes on between Ben and Lori. Wolfgang, although bright in his own right, really starts to appreciate the mechanical capabilities that Darren actually has and together the two of them manage to conquer the diagrams they dreamed.

Of course the sphere is still thier achievement, but enhancements are made to the Thunder Road and other new developents are made such as a form of time travel that allows them to be gone for long periods of time but they still return to the time they left as well as at the age they they left. This would allow for further explorations. Of course this would all be very nostalgic for them and they would be like kids again out there as would we the audiance.

Finally they meet WAK and NEEK again but are amazed to learn they are still children. To Wak and NEEK, the events of the first movie were only days before while Ben, Darren, Wolfgang and Lori know it to have been 20 years prior.

After thier time with WAK and NEEK, they set off to Explore more of the univerwse knowing they return to the time and age that they left whenever they so choose.

NOTE : although I love the first film, I wouldn't be against seriously updating and modifying WAK and NEEK alittle.

I made this up and wrote this as I went along. Although this is serious fan fiction and as much as I would love a sequal, this may be all we ever get. Any contributions to this sequal? Any entirely diffent sequal ideas?

Brilliant idea!

I like the idea you've offered but it creates a major problem...it's not a kids movie anymore. Its a movie for those who've seen the first and want to follow the continuing adventures. For younger kids, it might lose appeal that way. I think that having the original cast (with Wolfgang being played by some similar adult lookalike) is great still yet and even their lots in life.

But where I'd part is that Ethan's character is a single father and loves to tell stories to his son. He'd be the author you described because he didn't quite make it in astronauts training due to his continued daydreaming in class. As the movie opens Ben and his son are moving into a new house back in the old town. They move in next door to a normal suburban family with a 12 year old, beautiful, yet tom-boyish girl who befriends Ben's son quickly.

Later that week, Ben, leaving his publisher's office late at night swerves off the road to dodge something scurrying across the road. he makes it out OK but the car ends up in the river. He walks the rest of the way home and figures he'll deal with it in the morning.

At the same time at NASA, Wolfgang is hard at work trying to crack a formula that will allow his new top secret engine design to jump to hyper (warp) drive. He's been working on this problem for 2 years and is on the verge of breaking through when his latest test (out of hundreds it would appear from his expression) fails yet again. He decides that its time to take a much needed vacation for a few days in hopes that his "writers block" will lift and he'll be able to finally crack the code.

Darren's life is basically as you stated although at this point his little shop isn't getting much business these days due to larger companies moving into the area undercutting him. He decides to expand his business in a last ditch effort to make it before throwing in the towel. He figures the town could always use a towing company since there's very few in the town and this could seque his customers into other parts of his business. We see him sitting at home ratcheting a part on an old chopper he's restoring for himself and he stops for a moment, looks up at the clear night sky and says "What a waste" and throws the ratchet down. He goes into his humble home, grabs a beer and sits down at the table to a pile of bills. He opens his checkbook and sees that his funds are not making ends meet. He sighs and says "There's got to be a better way" and heads off to bed.

I kind of like where you put Lori at this point in her life so I'll leave that alone. Let's just say at the end of her day of work she realizes that things in her life aren't going the way she'd planned at her career is so lackluster that she begins to wonder why she even bothers working for the slave-driving boss she has anymore.

That night, Ben Jr. (for lack of a better name), the tom-boy neighbor and another kid we've yet to learn who he is all dream about a much more advanced circuit board though none of them are aware that there are others dreaming the same dream.

The next morning, Ben Sr. wakes up and gets out the old yellow pages to find someone to fish out his car. While he's calling around the area searching for prices, Ben Jr. comes down and tries to get dad's attention to tell him about the extraordinary dream he had. Ben Sr. more concerned at the present moment with tending to his water bound car ignores him and eventually tells Jr. to run along and play with the neighbor's girl. Ben runs across another business and calls the number. The man on the other end answers
"Darren's."
"Yeah, how much for a tow?"
"that depends on what your towing and where."
"My car is in the lake."
"What's your car doing in the lake?"
"Nevermind that. Can you do it?"
"Yeah, I guess. It's not really my thing but if you've got the money, I'll take care of it."
"Fine, fine. Meet me there at 10am."
"OK. What's your name?"
"Ben."
"OK Ben, see you there."

I could write more, but perhaps this is more than enough at present to give an idea of how I'd take the backstory. I'll let someone else take a shoet. Anyone else have any ideas?

I love the idea of building a premise from different people. I quite like these ideas, it reminds me a little of when I was a kid. After seeing Explorers for the first time I had a series of dreams, that led to me making up my own sequel. (For a while I thought aliens were trying to contact me, strange how a kids mind works, huh?)
Anyway to expand on your technical side about a more advanced sphere and time travel;

My own story included advancements on the sphere which could bend light. (Remember when they first created it in the film, they could not see it? So imagine if when it is like that, you can not see what is inside it either). A further change would be that it did not always need to be a sphere. A series of emitters around the hull of a new ship they built would allow them to project a more oval or oblong shape. Study would show that the shield could be broken down into different layers. One of which would allow for the 'stealth' ability I mentioned. Different layers would control speed; inertia; strength and even one that would regenerate an oxygen atmosphere- kind of like life support (heat, light, air etc.).
As adults they would find that the Thunderoad would be to small to fly in, so they build a larger vessel. If they are to spend longer periods of time in space, this vessel would need to function as a partial home. I have my own blueprints of six different types of vessel that I designed. (I got a bit carried away with my own story). The first two would suit the needs of this story that you are putting together, (single deck, open plan, about ten metres wide and thirty to thirty five metres long (I am working from memory here). The third design was my personal favourite, but it would require more backstory (Two decks, and a much more advanced control area with a detachable nose/ shuttle, and two 'sleds' ((one or two person transports- to save the vessel landing all of the time) all controlled with their own shields). The fourth, fifth and sixth designs are military based and would only work if they built a whole organsiation and a fleet of ships. I could write thousands of words on the designs of these things, but I figure that would be overkill!

Keep the ideas flowing, if nothing else we cold develop an interesting piece of fan fiction here.

There are some wonderful ideas here. Writing the dialog will be fun because they are all grown up now and there would be an element of sarcasm and even maybe a fist fight!

Having these people (who are now in their 30s or something) stuck in this ship exploring new parts of the universe reminds me of being a bit like The Life Aquatic - adults all stuck together on a ship.

Wolfgang would certainly provide us with a solution to any technical needs for the ship, life support and stuff. Ben would be the sensible guy, Darren is a bit of a loose cannon and Lori could provide the side plot / romance that goes on through the film.

Perhaps Darren stays with Neek in the end, because he has nothing on Earth (no family, no life).

Maybe even they could get involved in a space war between Neek's race and another race and Wolfgang provides the solution to saving them all.

Gentlemen,

These are all great ideas. Unfortunately, I really do not believe enough people saw this film at a young age to have the type of connection we experienced. Every time I have brought it up to someone of my age group, they have no idea what I am talking about.

The best part of this movie for me was the beginning and middle. I really did not care too much for how the aliens were portrayed. I was much more interested with the drama around the kids and their interaction.

You make a good point, Akula. I have always been let down by the third act. The fun of the kids interacting, building and testing their ship were always the interesting parts for me. Once they found the aliens, it kind of wasn't so fun anymore. There are a few people of my age who don't know the film but most of them do. It would be fun to pen a sequel anyway.

Yep, my thoughts exactly.

Yeah, I agree. I like where this thread is going. A lot of creative ideas put forward. I especially like how everyone portrayed Darren.

I actually think you might be wrong there... There were a LOT of us who identified with one or more of the characters. I saw Explorers over 200 times as a youth and many times as an adult. At one time I could quote the entire film. It is the only movie I ever watched more than just a few times. I was Darren...my best friends were Wolfgang and Ben. We are not alone...the movie production houses need to hear us.

I went to the theater to see this as a kid, and even then, I knew it needed a sequel. Even if it never sees the light of a projector, it at least deserves a fanfiction treatment on Schnoogle or something. Ben, Darren, and Wolfgang are great-- just like Kirk, Spock and McKoy...or Harry, Ron and Hermione.

I'm not sure I agree with your assessment there.

My son, who just turned 7, LOVES this movie. We've watched it on DVD many times.

I think a sequel with Ben, Darren & Wolfgang as adults and their children getting involved with the dreams is a fantastic idea.

But as its been stated on other threads, this movie didn't do very well when it was released because of its incomplete nature. I think that may keep a movie studio from wanting to reboot the concept OR do a sequel for it.

Its a shame though..b/c I love the story. Would have been nice for some of the under developed characters to become more fleshed out etc.

But I like the concept put forth in this thread. Interesting fanfic at the minimum.

this is one of the worst ideas I've ever seen

I love this movie and I think it would be great
but there is one main problem that no one of you has considered
The actor that did Wolfgang is Rivier Phoenix and (very unfortunately)he died in 1993....of overdose
very sad

reply

True, but since they'd be grown up in the film, who you use doesn't really matter as long as the new actor(s) capture the essence of the character they are portraying as adults.

reply

i think this film doesnt need a sequel, if anything they shouldve cut off the last part of the film about the ailens... maybe if he had created one back then it could have been good but now it wouldnt work at all

reply

i disagree this movie would not be the same without River Phoenix portraying Wolfgang...:(

Why don't you go home and f_ck your mother some more? Stand By Me

reply

I do like some of the suggested remake plotlines, but I think a sequel would be better served as fanfiction than as an actual movie.

However, I think it would be well worth doing a remake updated for the 21st century. Instead of walkie-talkies, they have cell phones. Instead of the girl passing the Ben a note, she sends him a text message. Instead of a picture of her in his pocket, he has it on his phone. The junkyard dude has an ipod instead of walkman.

It would also have better special effects. And the aliens could be a lot more serious (still humorous, but not outright cheesy).

Otherwise, pretty much the same kind of plot. Perhaps Ethan Hawke can be the helicopter pilot who says "good for you".
