Is this movie actually about DMT?

This might be a stretch, but there seems to be a lot of references to entheogens, specifically DMT. Take the title Explorers, is this a reference to psychonautics, the exploration of the mind through meditation or mind altering substances?

A large portion of the film revolves around vivid hallucinations, or dreams. DMT is the molecule that is released while sleeping to create dreams. If taken otherwise, it will create vivid hallucinations. DMT users can also experience a roller coaster feeling, or possibly flying feeling, which is referenced throughout the film.

In the beginning of the movie Ben asks Wolfgang to create the microchip from his dreams, this could reference a chemist formulating DMT for Ben.

Darren soon tells Ben he cannot dream, but later in the film, with the help of the microchip(DMT) he enters Ben's own dream.

While experimenting with the microchip(DMT) the boys all experience vivid hallucinations of flying, space, and even aliens that know pop culture. The aliens know pop culture not because of radio signals, but because they are figments of the boys' imaginations.

The aliens ship may resemble certain anatomical parts to some, but it may also be viewed as a DMT pipe.

Towards the end Ben receives a crystal from the alien. The alien claims that the crystal is what dreams are made of. Again, this is a direct reference to DMT; also processed DMT is crystalline in form.

At the very end Ben's crush even passes him a note asking "How was the trip?" could this be a reference to a drug trip?

Like I said, its a stretch.

Not to be nitpicky but the note stated, "Have a nice trip?
She awoke from a dream in which she knew exactly what happened, and this drew her to head towards the marina and she seen their crashed space ship.

I believe one day soon we will all realize, or it will be revealed, that all movies have some sort of hidden (or blatantly obvious) message, wrapped up in a form to "entertain" us, even dopey popcorn/turn off the brain-type of movies. More and more you see movies with symbols that are associated with secret societies. What does all this mean? It's open to speculation, IMHO. Unless the powers that be come out and say something, we can only guess, but would we believe them? Or dismiss it?

So good call on the DMT reference. Pretty much everyone that has done DMT or Ayahuasca has reported seeing some sort of "alien" entity during their trip. And even Graham Hancock mentions in his lecture about seeing shimmering patterns in geometric shapes during altered states of conscientiousness and going through a vortex. >>>http://youtu.be/0qgMFO0KU-I?t=14m01s<<<; Now mind you, I just finished watching Explorers moments ago, came back to your thread, and then did a Google search and then went to Youtube. Graham Hancock always talks about altered states of conscientiousness so I only had to scroll through just a little to land on the topic I linked above. But what a trip, huh? (no pun intended). He's describing a scene from Explorers, where they're flying over the computer circuit.

good call bigrich! and perfect link, it really does describe the movie. the microchip (geometric patterns), the bubble (vortex), and finally when they meet the aliens (parallel world). its stunning how similar some of the patterns truly are to the microchip

As I was writing that post I started to think: "One could argue that Graham Hancock saw the movie Explorers and got the idea..." but it is highly doubtful.

Had I not watched many videos and listened to podcasts about DMT, I would have dismissed your post, but I'm glad I didn't. I never would have thought this movie was nothing more than just a kiddy flick. But then again, most of the movies aimed towards children have the highest amount of hidden message/mind control type of programming.
