First Film's Director?

I've heard that this film was originally in the process of being shot by another director then production was shut down after cost overruns. Then the production was picked up again with Peterson at the helm, went through a different pre-production and was re-shot on different locations (none of the first production's work was used). Does anyone know who the first director was?

In his Trivia post in IMDB, this is written:

----Was replaced by Wolfgang Petersen as director of "Enemy Mine".

Terry Gilliam was offered the job. The studio said if he directed "Enemy Mine" they would fincance "Brazil" but he said "Hell no" and left and went to Universal.
