Petition to release Richard Loncraine's version on DVD

Like many fans of the film, I am curious to see the version that Richard Loncraine had shot in Iceland, before things got dicey between him and the executives at 20th Century Fox. As I understand it, his version is still sitting somewhere in a vault at the 20th Century Fox Studios.

Like the Richard Donner Cut of Superman II, I'm certain that the Icelandic version could be released on DVD. We need to get a petition going. Maybe, with enough signatures and letters sent to the executive board at Fox, we could see some results.

Opinions, anyone?

I agree... Seems like his ending was more complete too..

I talked to a friend, who is also a fan, and my friend has set up a petition on petitiononline.com.

Here is the link.

If it could be done for Superman II - The Richard Donner Cut, it can certainly be done for this classic.

Let's start flooding 20th Century Fox with these requests, shall we?

Would someone be so kind as to enlighten me as to why this version is superior to the one released in the theaters? You have piqued my curiosity.

reply

Yes, Please do explain the difference. I just rented the Enemy Mine dvd just for the hell of it. It has been a long time since I last saw this film in mid '90's so it's been over what? 14 years?

You've aroused my curiosity about Richard Loncraine's version. Unless I'm wrong, the director for the film was Wolfgang Petersen? How did Richard Loncraine's version fit in this issue?

reply

I'm just curious to see what Loncraine's version was like. From what i understand, his footage is still sitting in the vaults of 20th Century Fox. My guess is that what he shot is totally different from what Petersen re-shot.

Like both versions of Superman II, there are obviously different shots and other cool things in both versions of Enemy Mine. I'd like to know what those differences are. So would a lot of other fans.

This petition should attract more atention from the fans.

Only 27 signatures so far.

I'm very interested to see Loncraine's version.

I was there when Richard Loncraine shot the film in Iceland (Vestmannaeyjar, which is an small island). They put so much work into the film. Such a shame that nothing came off it.

What do you recall of the original shoot in Iceland?

reply

A crash site, wish they put a lot of work into and bug eating (the bugs where made of marzipan). I did not work at the site, just went to look at them working.

The real question is how far into post-production did they get? From what I've read... none at all. If the footage is sitting in the vault, it's probably a bunch of raw footage which has aged poorly. I'm sure it was never edited into a rough cut, or had any special FX added to it before the studio decided to reshoot the whole thing. Enemy Mine doesn't quite have the fan following of Superman 2, so there's no way it would get the kind of attention and money put into releasing a decent looking version of Loncraine's cut on DVD. It would be a huge mess and not worth the effort as far as the studio is concerned. The most we could ever hope for is random clips of the rough footage included as a supplement on a special edition DVD of the theatrical film. This movie is long overdue for a special edition anyway, so seeing a few "cut scenes" of the original cut would be great. On a related note... is there a script out there for Loncraine's original version to give us some specific insight into how different it might have been? What do we really know about how different it is, aside from its filming location?

reply

What you call "his" version is a different cut or a whole different film with a different cast and crew? In either case, it can't be a complete film. I'd be interested to see that though. Will go to sign the petition.
