Drac female

I never saw the movie yet but are they any female Dracs in the movie.

reply

No females. Shigan said, with humans, to create a new life, is a choice. With Dracs it happens when it happens. So that would mean they are asexual.

In fact, when it is said what Davidge knows about Dracs, one of the details is that they aren't males or females, but both.

In the novella, Dracs were described as being hermaphrodites.

Hermaphrodites = Asexual REPRODUCTION (not sexual identity, but *Reproduction*).
They are one in the same.... put simply - reproduction coming from one "parent" with both sexes..... so the Dracs are born with both Male & Female organs & so have an Asexual Reproduction system...
Besides, like said before, Quaid's character in the V.O. said plain as day "The Dracs were both - male and female"

If Dracs are described as being hermaphrodites how come Jerry decided to impregnate himself whilst marooned on some planet with his mortal enemy? Does the novel say anything about the reasoning behind it?

reply

I never read the novel, but it is well documented that, after a war, the birthrate increases (a biological impulse to ensure the survival of the warring parties)...at least on humble earth, but i think something like that could be a motivator for the Drak, too.

A friend of mine who read Longyear's novel told me, recently, that the Drac are capable of reproducing sexually if they chose to do so. And that some Drac are told by their government to reproduce this way to strengthen and refresh their gene-pool.

Now I'm going to need to read the novel, as the Drac figure very prominently in a roleplaying scenario I'm running.
