prosthetic makeup effects

just saw this again on amc and was taken by the makeup job done on louis gosset jr. for his jerry character ... i know that they would have spent more time on this lead character for the extended close up shots etc but ... damn, i thought the level of detail and sensitivity to allowing the actor to show expression and emotion was superb ... kudos!!! both to louis gossett jr and the special effects team for working out the issues involved. i'm not a cgi vs. honest movie making debater ... i think the growing formats and marriage of the two have alot to offer ...
just my 2 cents worth ... one of my all time faves.

I agree. The prosthetic make-up for the Dracs was excellent and still holds up well even today.

I just watched this movie again and kept telling my wife how amazing Gosset's makeup was.

I have to agree.. Blew me away the first time I saw the movie, and the mask could still hold its own even today.

Lou Gossett's ability to make the gutteral noises as he spoke (that's really him
and not any audio trickery) also make his character unforgettable. The FX
are pretty un-impressive, but that's not what makes the movie worth watching.
Jerry and Davidge's acceptance of each other and needing each ther to survive
does.

This movie has been playing on Encore this month, so I've rewatched it about four times lately. I love it!
I agree, the Drakh makeups are fantastic. I can't help but wonder how did they get Bumper Robinson/Zammis, who would have been 9 or 10 when this was made, to hold still for his makeup? I've seen how torturous makeups this complex are to apply, sometimes requiring hours, and I'm amazed that a child could and would endure it. The only other child makeups I can think of offhand are from Star Trek and are basically just forehead prostheses and color, not so bad to sit through.
