THE DAM IS REAL

Once again the Brazilian government is building a dam in the heart of the Amazon. It will be the third largest hydro-electric dam in the world and it will destroy the homes and livelihood of over 20,000 Indians. And it is only the first of a series of dams the government is planning.

All this is being done in violation of the United Nations treaty requiring that governments consult Indigenous communities before building on their land. Brazil signed that treaty and is now going back on their word. Please sign this petition to stop the destruction of the Amazon:

Hey! This is a family-friendly site. Your statement should be, "The darn is real!"

I was wondering when someone was going to respond to this. The Emerald Forest is the movie that first got me interested in the Amazon and the people who live there. Since then, I've built a website devoted to movies about Native Americans in the Amazon and all over Latin America http://www.nativeamericanfilms.org because I believe that movies are a great way to get people interested, and then involved, in parts of the world they wouldn't normally know or care much about. The Amazon may seem irrelevant to people living in industrial nations that are far from it geographically and culturally, but it is NOT irrelevant. Once the Amazon is destroyed, global warming will increase rapidly and we will all be doomed. So even if you don't care about the people whose entire way of life will be destroyed by the dam, you should at least care about your own life, and the lives of your grandchildren who will struggle for survival on a baking planet.
