I didn't make the connection at first, but you're right! Similar storyline and the point is made more convincingly.

The problem is today without special effects it wouldn't hold the attention of today's average movie goer.

Of course it is better, Avatar was a terrible movie.

Avatar was a 3D theatre experience, but as a 2D home movie, yeah, it's rather crap.

indeed. Although it also is a fairytale compared to the real world - sad enough. Imho also very recommendable movies regarding destruction of non-'white' cultures are Rabbit-Proof Fence and The Mission.

Agreed. Made the same connection while watching the movie, and came to the same conclusion. It achieves what Avatar tried and failed to do.

Sorry. Avatar is WAY better. This was too cheesy and ALL the interpersonal dynamics, unrealistic.

Ohh, I get it, the joke is the irony in Avatar being the cheesiest movie of the last decade. Clever.

My point is, a LOT of people like Avatar, me included. Saying it's worse, cheesier, whatever, than this movie is a subjective opinion and lambasting others over their opinions/tastes or proclaiming that you have better taste, etc. is foolish at best. I responded in kind, to illustrate how ridiculous threads like this are.
