I was just wondering if anyone who owns the new bluray release could shed some light on some issues relating to the audio/language I have been reading on the net?
- Apparently and right at the start of the film when the word Demons zooms into the screen that creepy synth is no longer present. Is that the case?
- Is there any difference with the scene of the punks in the car. Ive heard that the dialogue has been changed?
- Are there any other scenes where the dialogue has been changed?
- Does the film utilise full surround sound?
These probably seems like really minor issues but I must have watched Demons around 100 times since I was a little kid and can reel out the dialogue off the back of my hand so just need a heads up!
Likewise with me. I've watched the VHS and DVD versions a thousand times. I know all the dialogue off by heart. And the soundtrack as well. So when changes happen it irritates me as the audio track used in the VHS and DVD versions could be used in the Blu Ray versions. But they don't want to spend the money on transfering them. So why should anyone spend their money on products that don't have 100% effort put into them. Money needs to be spent in order for it to be made. And this is something Arrow Video seems to be avoiding with these two Demons movies.
"I want to kill everyone. Satan is good. Satan is our pal."
From the reviews I've read, the transfer looks absolutely amazing in HD, however hardcore Demons fans have spotted a number of differences with the audio from previous DVD releases and have therefore knocked their review down a few points.
As a hardcore fan myself, I dont want to spend 'x' amount on the bluray to find that some scenes are different from what i have been used to for all these years as i know it will irritate me lol
Until I know exactly what the diffrences are I'm going to hold back on buying I think.
Exactly. The slightest change to anything the UK version has puts a massive dent in the morale for buying these BR versions. And in the DVD department foreign movies that were dubbed in the past no longer have the UK VHS dubbing tracks for the movies. Well, not many of them do. It's the US dubbing tracks used instead for the DVD versions of the same movies most of the time.
All of Jackie Chan's older movies being released on the "Cine Asia" distributor is guilty of the above. Same goes for the "Hong Kong Legends" releases of Chans older movies. They all use the US dubbing which in some scenes has completely different dialogue and music added where there wasn't music before. Which kills a scene dead in terms of atmosphere and tension. The folks in the US might be ok with the versions they have. But I am not ok with their versions of the dubbing tracks. There was two different dubbing tracks for a reason to start with. And the same should go for the BR releases as well.
I am not buying these BR versions of the two Demons movies untill they drop to like £10 or less. I'd fork the cash out in a heart beat if they were worth it. But as it stands, they are not. Arrow aint all that like some would have you believe. And the lazy antics shown in these two movies proves that. Picture quality for me isn't the be all end all. It's the overall product that counts for me. So these two Demons movies can have great pictures but the dubbing IS EVERYTHING when it comes to foreign movies that are dubbed. A little effort put into the production of these BR version would pay off in the end. Break sweat transfering them and the fans will thank them in the end. Take the council worker route in transfering them and they get the middle finger instead!.
"I want to kill everyone. Satan is good. Satan is our pal."
Just something about the English audio that no one has brought up yet: it's not just the punks and Frank with different voices/dialogue, there are dozens of lines that are different - the same dialogue by the same voice actors but different takes/readings. Cheryl and Kathy at the beginning is an easy example. The changes are subtle but noticeable. Another thing, that line "It's Count Dracula" is in the Italian version as well, so that's the way it was originally written! "It's the Coke in your ears" must have been a later change?! I don't like this version at all. All the extra musical stings and sound FX are really annoying and the punks' voices don't fit at all. Actually, they sound weird, the audio itself, like the pitch was lowered or something...
You see folks this is what gets me riled up big time. It makes me want to hulk out and snap each Arrow employee in half. The insistance of wanting the BR versions to be exactly like the VHS versions each region is used to is the way forward. Don't let them decide how it's done. After all WE'RE the ones parting with our cash for these products. Other companies raped and ruined Jackie Chan's movies on reissue. It seems Arrow has done the same with both Demons movies. Thanks for nothing Arrow!.
PS This is what is GREAT about the net. It allows us to find all this out before purchasing a movie. If this was, say, 2000. Then I'd probably have bought the movies just because it was both Demons movies. No questions asked. But as time moved on I got wiser. I started investigating into the quality of each transfer of each movie I am about to purchase. You see back in 2000 I never had access to the net. It wasnt untill 2003 I got online. And ever since I did that I look at everything in a different light. I see how much of a ripoff store bought movies are. I see how much conning these movie distributors attempt with their "versions" of older movies reissued (Yes Arrow I mean you too). You open your eyes and see a whole lot more thanks to the net. I bet this really annoys these companies that this happens. It's costing them potential sales. And it's their own *beep* fault!.
"Beware the Judas, he'll drag you down. A deal with the Devil can put you underground"
100% agree Trioxin. The mere thought of watching Demons on Bluray had me salivating at the mouth, akin to a Demon but not iluminous green I might add! Like you said, the net is a fantstaic source of information and because of it, we thankfully haven't spent our hard earned money on something which would have left us feeling disappointed.
Some people will probably think this is OTT whining and we should be grateful it's out on blurasy but when you've grown up on this movie, even the tiniest difference becomes a massive annoyance.
Metallion sos - I take it you've got the Bluray? I hope Im not asking the impossible but would you be able to reel out a list of the differences with the audio? You mentioned extra musical stings and fx? Can you ellaborate? I was also reading somehting about the noise levels noticebaly changing in certain scenes i.e. the projection booth?
It will probably be like Jackie Chans re-releases. In some scenes the entire dialogue is different. Different voice actors as well in some cases. Different musical scores. The lot. I don't understand why the dicks do this to movies. If they can bring two different versions out to begin with then they sure as *beep* *beep* can do it with the technology they have at their disposal today. And any excuse, that works against what I just said, from them will be laughed at. Respect is given when it is earned and due. Not before. No deleted scenes, no behind the scenes, no extended cut. Nothing really decent in the way of extras.
All we get (from what I read) is like crappy interviews with this person and that person. And other such nonsense no one really cares about when it comes to extras. If they are going to give us *beep* interviews for the Demons movies then give us both George and Cheryl from the first movie and also Hannah (the lovely Nancy Brilli) from the second Demons movie. No they go and give us interviews with Argento and Bava's lackies instead. The sheer excitement in that fact has me pissing my pants with excitement... NOT!.
And if any one out there thinks we're over reacting then they can go and hang themselves... and dont worry they wont be missed!. It's the fact they expect us Demon fans to part with our cash for these products that means we can and WILL voice our views on these very products. Give them to us for free then and ONLY THEN will we not have any ground on which to stand on in the feedback of the overall quality.
*edit* I is going to have a look at both Blu Ray versions in the next day or so. I know someone who is buying them (not me!) so I will get back to you my friend on here in this very thread. Once I've watched them myself... free of charge of course. THEN I will let you know if you and I are kicking up more fuss than is called for. I'll get back to you in a day or two on here sir.... stay tuned.

The extra musical stings and sound fx are everywhere, far too many to list. Lots of ominous rumbling. And the music is slighty different in places, like White Wedding starts a bit earlier and Night Danger fades out when that girl goes into the room, then burts back on after Rosemary attacks her. And some of the score is different in places, like, IIRC, when Tony gets attacked. It's worth noting that the Italian track sounds wonderful, full and rich, and is closer to the other English track we're all used to (besides being in Italian, obviously). I didn't notice the noise levels changing.

I have them both sitting right here as I type hahahahahaha!. Yes the normal versions not the crappy nappy metal boxed limited version. The comic book is tiny so it is. I don't see why they couldn't include both parts in the metal boxed version since it's the size it is. Not checked the comic out yet. Will do later on though.
Out of the four covers available I have to say the original versions are the best. Well, the originals for the area I live in that is. So that's the Demoni cover of the Demons coming up the stairs and the Demons 2 cover of Sally standing in the doorway. The rest are sort of so so at best.
There are two posters (one in each case) and on one side of each poster is like an art drawing of the Demons. And the other side is like the official poster version of the movie. If I was going to use one it would be the official poster version of the movie. But I don't use these sorts of things. I just keep them all inside the cases. The posters were just put inside the cardboard slipcases. But when I opened them the posters were put inside the cases alongside the comic and the other leaflet thing that was there. They all fit inside fine and the case closes easily with them all inside.
So, Metalion they fade out the Pretty Maids song Night Danger and then it comes back on again. That sounds a bit naff. The whole thing should have played on without fading out and then coming back. That whole coming back on once Tony's chick attacks the bint never happened in the Platinum Releases version I have on DVD. It's the proper english (UK dubbing track used in that release).
See how you describe the movie with all the changes. It reminds me of Argento's cut of Dawn of the Dead. It was dreadful so it was. Infact the truth be told. The only good thing about his cut of the movie was it included a few scenes never before shown in the versions we own over here. Everything else was kind of lame. Musical cues where there was none before - which kills the tension or dread in a particular scene. Things that happen are cut shorter than before or not shown at all. Yeah it was a nightmare. I only watched it once to see the difference then stuck to the normal version we have here.
When you love certain movies and have watched them often enough. The slightest change you notice right away. And depending on how much of a change it is - it can annoy like *beep* so it can. It's almost face punchingly annoying at times so it is.
Did anyone else notice that George's pal in Demons (the first one) is also in Lamberto Bava's Graveyard Disturbance as well. I said George's pal (in the first one) because both main leads of both Demons movies is called George. And by the way, like I said in the other post. Once I've watched these two movies I will come back here and give my view on the overall products... stay tuned for more.
"Beware the Judas, he'll drag you down. A deal with the Devil can put you underground"
Trioxin/Metalion - a huge thumbs up for all your responses and views/help throughout this thread, it really is appreciated.
Trioxin, I look forward to your final observations once you've managed to watch both movies. Just try not to attack the TV if the changes become too annoying!!! :)
At the start where Cheryl is on the train we see mask face in the reflection of the window. The music sort of fades out a little there and then comes back again.
Then when Cheryl gets off the train there is a low ambient score playing in the background. Which, by the way, kills the eerie tension in that scene. Like we know she's all alone and it's creepy. But the music kills that vibe in this version.
Every now and then that low ambient score creeps in in scenes where things slow down for a time.
The Pretty Maids song "Night Danger" starts a second or two earlier than normal. It kicks in just as Rosemary kills that woman snogging the guy in private. Where as in the version I have it kicks in just as they start running up the stairs to the front doors of the cinema if I'm not mistaken. Then it fades out to then discusssing in loud voices about what to do and where to go. Then the music kicks back in again and that chick in the blue dress wanders off from the crowd. And when this happens it once again fades out and as she's standing at the door Rosemary appears and attacks her. Then the music once again kicks back in from where it left off last time.
Tony the Pimp on the balcony where he gets his leg bitten by the chick who he was about to throw over the balcony to the floor below. In that scene the Demons main theme plays as he's being attacked and then and falls over the edge to the ground below. In my DVD version that doesn't happen.
Most of the druggies dialogue in the car is different. One or two lines is the same. Like the one where the blonde skank says something like "It's not my fault, Ripper" and then when the same woman says "This is me, I was one year old" when she shows Ripper a photo of herself as a baby. Ripper replies "Already selling your tw@ huh!" and she replies *beep* you!". I think that is the same dialogue in both versions. Nearly everything else they say is different though from what I remember. Example: where the blonde bint gets her tit cut by the razor she says in my DVD version in retaliation to the cut "When I get near your prick, mores the pitty" or something like that. But in this version it's "You're a prick, piggy" or that's what it sounds like anyway.
I think that most (or all) of the dialogue from the main cast is intact. It's the same in both versions from what I can gather. So the druggie dialogue in the car being different doesn't bother me. The main cast dialogue is what matters. George, the lovely Cheryl, Kathy the Megan Fox look-a-like, and George's pal. They are all the same voice actors and dialogue. What I will say is that if there is any different dialogue from any of those four then it is minor at best.
The scene where George bombs it around the cinema on the bike with the Accept song "Fast as a Shark" playing in the background. I was always under the assumption that it kicked in as soon as he came flying through the curtain into the room Cheryl was in. But in this version it is completely silent in terms of music or ambient sounds. The song it's self kicks in when George skids to a halt and Cheryl jumps on the back of the bike. He revs up the bike and off he goes and this is when the song kicks in. I might be wrong and that the song starts at the same part in both movies. It's been a while since I've seen it on DVD. But I think this part IS different on the BR version. If I am wrong then this particular paragraph of the post will be altered later as I will check the DVD version to be sure.
At the end credits we hear a Demon growl once the credits have finished completely. Same goes for the start of the movie when the word DEMONI appears onscreen. A Demon sound effect appears there as well.
THE ONLY REAL FLAW is in the extras. The commentary tracks with Lamberto Bava are absolutely terrible. The sound quality is like it was recorded on a cassette tape back in the 80s. And then it was transfered onto the blu ray disc. Imagine Lamberto and co sitting behind a brick wall about twenty miles away from the mic that's recording their voices and this is what the sound is like. VERY BAD AUDIO QUALITY. This is a shame cause I'd love to have listened to Lamberto talking about the movie. It's difficult to hear what is being said through the extremely low quality audio for the commentary tracks. The movies sound is fine though. No worries there.
Overall I am not disappointed with the first movie on Blu Ray. The picture quality though isn't exactly amazing. It's a good transfer but it's not amazing. But the movie it's self is worth a purchase at some point though definitely. So it's up to you all when you buy it.
Besides all of the above that's all I can find to be different. It might be a lot or it might not be. But either way it's what I spotted from viewing the first movie. I will post later about the second movie. It will be later tonight or tomorrow. I only watch these sorts of movies at night with the lights out. ANy other time will just ruin them.
Movie 10. Picture Quality 9. Audio 9. Screen Ratio 8. Extras 6.
The extras would get a higher rating if it wasn't for that dreadful audio quality of the commentary tracks. And the screen ratio is not what I'd have expected. It had black bars on the left and right side of the screen. This usually is only found at the top and bottom of the screen.
"Beware the Judas, he'll drag you down. A deal with the Devil can put you underground"
Trioxin, a massive thank you for taking the time out to report back with all your findings on this. Your review was brilliant - very informative (and witty!) and has been a huge help.
As a fellow Demons fan sharing the same concerns as myself, you obviously didn't find the changes too distracting, even though they were present, so I think I probably will end up purchasing the bluray, even if it's just out of curiosity, but will definitely wait for the price to come down - I'm sure Amazon or HMV will be selling it a hell of a lot cheaper in the coming months.
I must admit I am kinda gutted the creepy intro right at the very start is no longer present though. That cool freaky synth in the background when the names Lamberto Bava, Dario Argento and then the title Demons zooms into the screen always used to get my adrenaline going knowing what carnage lies ahead :(
If I do find the changes to be too much of an annoyance I'll just revert back to my trusted DVD copy which, apart from Aliens, is probably my most watched DVD lol You see, this is one of the great things about Demons, the movie may be unintentionally hilarious with ridiculous plot holes and bad hair, but its rewatchability is just amazing!
Yeah I guess it wasn't too bad. I was really ready for the worst possible outcome so that if it happened I wouldn't be any more pissed than I was upon thinking about it. The changes didn't disappoint me to the point of sitting there shaking my head and getting angrier by the second. It was more like "Oh this isn't as bad as I thought".
One thing I love about this movie is the outcome.
It's George that survives alone. He goes off with those that picked him up in the jeep into the horizon. His fate unknown. Out into a world now populated by Demons. Everyone else from the cinema that went into it died somewhere along the way. The ending was just awesome so it was. It was a shock to find out that after all that the lovely Cheryl was infected as well. That is what made the ending shocking and yet brilliant. We think, as the credits roll, that she and George got away. Then all of a sudden the credits stop and BLAM she turns into a Demon in the back of the jeep and George is like "WTF?!" and Cheryl (who is no longer attractive lol) gets blammed by a shotgun and that's the end of her. Then we see the jeep driving off into the distance and round the corner out of sight and the camera focuses on Cheryl lying there in the middle of the road dead in Demon form. The Demons really did, in the end, make cemeteries their cathedrals and tombs our cities.
Bleak endings like this don't have a warm welcome by Hollywood.
This movie never gets tiresome to watch. Not even after all these years. It's just one of those special movies where the magic never fades. This sort of movie is so few and far between now. It's a dying trade it would seem. The whole premise is pretty good and since it has a guy standing alone at the end of the fray I like it even more. I am not fussy about plot holes and acting. Just as long as it's passable and entertaining then that's all that matters to me. And Demons passes those qualifications with flying colours.
Not many horror movies end with a guy standing alone at the end of it all. And this is one reason why I'd be against (with a passion) a remake as they are stuck in a rut with how horror movies end. It's either they all get killed or the girl survives alone. That's how it's done most of the time these days.
Just keep your DVD copies of the movies. I know I will be keeping them. They have the proper dubbing tracks that I like. Even if the BR versions are ok I'll still be keeping the DVD versions. I will watch Demons 2 later tonight.
Trioxin Zombie [to Bobby Rhodes]: "I hear there is talks of a remake of Demons. Any thoughts?"
Bobby Rhodes: "Smash everything! smash everything! smash everything!"
Mary: "You've a face like a pair of tits!" John: "Well at least that's one pair between us"
The scene where everyone in the appartment building is watching the horror movie on tv. In the horror movie one of the women finds a Demon nail lying in the ashes at her feet. She says something like "hey look what I've found" and then the camera shows the nail lying there. If you listen really closely to the music in that particular moment. It sounds like it's faulty as the volume differs there. It lasts one maybe two seconds at most. Nothing to worry about that.
Near the finale when the camera is looking up through the gap in the spiral staircase. We see the Demons at the top stop and look over the edge and downwards. As if they are looking right down at the camera. At that exact moment on both the left and right sides of the screen in the dark it looks a little grainy to be honest. It doesn't look smooth in the dark section more grainy than anything.
AND the part where I though was a right annoyance wasn't there. I never saw it. In the Platinum releases version on DVD it was a really bad transfer. When the little gremlin creature attacks Hannah in one particular moment in the apartment there are lines all over the screen. Think a damaged VHS tape type of lines on the screen and you have it. It might be the scene where it pounces and lands on the bed and Hannah flips the bed up into the wall where it folds into that the lines appear on the Platinum version. That was flawless on the Blu Ray version. NOT ONCE did it show any lines over the screen. So two thumbs up to Arrow for that one. And two thumbs down for Platinum Releases for that one.
The screen shakes a couple of times during the movie. Like they filmed in an earth quake or something. But it's like for a second maybe two seconds each time. So it's not bothersome for me. The lines on the screen like a damaged VHS tape thing was my biggest worry for the Demons 2 BR release. It wasn't there. So somehow when Platinum transfered it to DVD from VHS or whatever they *beep* up big time and those lines were put out on their version.
The screen ratio is the same as Demons.
The picture quality I wasn't sure of at the start. It didn't look very good for some reason. I mean it wasn't like "*beep* yeah this is what I'm talking about" it was more like "The DVD version looks the same or better than this". But as the movie went on it looked a little better. Maybe it was the slight grainy effect in some scenes that made it feel like that.
The end credits felt different to me. I thought the shot of George and Hannah walking away from the building and the screen freezing then the credits rolled. I thought it stayed on their faces longer in the DVD version than the BR version. I could be wrong on this one. Like when the screen froze on their faces the credits rolled over the picture of them. In this BR version it fades to black then the credits roll. Like I said I might be wrong on this for the DVD version as its been a while.
Speaking of the possibility of being wrong. I was with Demons and the Fast as a Shark song with George on the bike scene. The DVD version has the same silent no music or ambient score as he bursts through the curtain. It kicks in when Cheryl gets on the bike on the DVD version just like the BR version.
There is absolutely minimal changes made to the Demons 2 Blu Ray version. So there should be no worries what so ever with this one.
Did anyone notice Ripper the druggie from the first one is the security guard for the apartment block in the second one. And did anyone notice that Ripper from the first one sounds like Stallone.
Mary: "You've a face like a pair of tits!" John: "Well at least that's one pair between us"
Oh, so the lines you talked about it's actually called scratches. Film print damage. They looked something like this on the DVD, right? http://craftframework.com/files/2011/01/julie-590x590.jpg (Extreme example which is a fake photoshop job)
When i asked them on the Cult-Labs forum, one of the members who replied must have thought that it was those moments when the camera shakes. Which they couldn't do nothing about. Scratches however are fixable.
The damage didn't look like that photo damage sir. Its damage like if the VCR has tried to eat the tape then you play that same tape afterward. All these lines come up on the screen and the picture is *beep* completely. Well the picture wasn't *beep* up completely in the Platinum Releases version but it was bad enough to notice. If it was the VHS version I was watching I'd have thought the last person using it had caused the damage with their VCR chewing the tape. I guess you could call them scratches or whatever. I'm not sure what the correct labeling would be for damage like that. THIS is whay puzzles me though pal how in the hell they managed to get damage like that into the transfer on the DVD. I have never in my life seen that happen before. Never. Not untill Platinum Releases brought the movie out. I would say it doesn't need to be fixed if the transfer is done right. If that is the case there will be no "tape eaten lines all over the screen" when watching it. And there wasn't when the Gremlin attacked the lovely Hannah. I was waiting on it happening but it never happened.
The thing is I own the Platinum Releases versions of both Demons movies on single disc versions and a boxset version with the two movies and an interview disc as a bonus. And those lines are there on both the single disc version of Demons 2 and the boxset version as well. So it's not the case of a damaged DVD were I alone might have that problem. It seems to be a continuous flaw in the Platinum Demons 2 releases.
Mary: "You've a face like a pair of tits!" John: "Well at least that's one pair between us"
That's it though pal. The damage was not on the UK VHS version. But it was on Platinum Releases DVD versions (all releases they made of the movie). So the damaged footage is solely related to their releases only from what I've gathered. It wasn't there before and after. So the company that did the Arrow versions was working off of the version that Platinum Releases was working off of. Only they didn't bugger up the transfer like Platinum did or the company that did the transfer for Platinum. Which by the way is a good thing. Those lines were annoying. So glad they are not in Arrows version.
"If I want any lip from you. I'll rip it off your face"
The aspect ratio is correct, when it has borders at the sides it's 1.66:1 which was a common ratio used back then. The real problem with the transfer is that the black level is wrong - you have to turn down the brightness on your TV, or change your PS3 setting to RGB: Full for it to look correct.
to be fair on the alternate audio in demons and to arrow , arrow did say they tryd to synch up the other audio track but the print thay had contain a few extra shots hear and there and it would of been impossible to synch up the other dub to it they did try but claimed it would of been very expensive to do so you must remember this HD print is taken from the Italian master which it a slightly different cut than the one we are used to
from what i know this dub on the blu ray is based of the Italian edit and is mono when they where told that they should do a Dolby stereo dub for English speaking country's they did so but sychd it up to a slightly tighter cut of the film so the only way to get the other dub would to ether use the tighter print or spend a lot of money synching the tighter dub to the looser print
i think this is the case take it or leave it
you will have to forgive the lack of full stops lack of proper spelling im dyslexic but not stupid
