Cheryl's friend Kathy, was she pregnant? That way, when she began to turn into a demon, so did the baby. That is the only reasoning I can come up with for why the demon would emerge from her back. That demon was the baby.

The way I look at it, that's what the demons looked like without a human host.

I wouldn't be surprised. Kathy was pretty moody.
